i got him last week, he is neutered, vaccinated, chipped everything and so affectionnate its great! also he's really playful. the stuff that bothers me is that he miows all the time when not playing/cuddling/eating/sleeping. he was rescued from a house with loads of cats and i wonder if he is calling for his buddies? also he's itching to go out but need to keep him in 3 weeks. he's really loving and attention doesn't stop him miowing as he gets loads but when he wants to miow that all he does. and as for being playful, perhaps a little too playful sometimes, he tears around the house knocking things over and is so hyper, especially on a morning! will he calm down? I've had cats before but was only young when they were young so don't remember them being this wild playing and this noisy!

I have had cats pretty much since i can remember and have come across all sorts of wonderful personalities. There are some cats out there, especially Siamese cats who are very vocal. I have a tabby and he doesn't keep quiet for the life of him. It is entertaining "talking" to him though. I've had a few kittens that have been very active and play-full as kittens and right up until 2-3 years old but they usually do calm down. Its a good thing your kitty is active as opposed to being withdrawn. Coming from a house full of cats, yes he might feel a little lonely and will cry but as long as he gets the appropriate love and attention then he'll be fine. Is he used to being outside? Then hang in there for the few weeks and then see what happens after when you let him out. Just don't get into the habit of petting him whenever he cries because then he will cry all the time. Let him settle in for a few more weeks and see if he calms down. If not take him to your vet and see maybe he doesn't suffer from any underlying symptoms - hyperactive Good luck!

It is possible that he's just a talkative cat. I have a cat that meows constantly, for food, to be pet, once I'm petting her she meows, when she's playing - she meows constantly and I asked the vet if she's alright and some cats just meow alot. I personally think it's adorable, if I say something to her... she meows back and guests just think it's so amusing or anyone I'm on the phone with doesn't believe she'll actually have a conversation with me. Also, my cat is EXTREMELY hyper, she knows places she's not allowed to be and she'll climb onto things then call me to her to show me that she's breaking the rules. He may be trying to test you to see how much you'll let him get away with. It could also be the breed of the cat... I have a Singapura which is known to always be hyper for the life of the cat no matter what age. Do some research on the breed.

But what I find adorable may irritate you so there is a way to stop a cat from meowing so much.

If you are petting him and he begins to meow, ignore him until he stops and only pet him when he's quiet. If he meows and you pet him or pick him up or give him attention he will continue to meow - when he does meow ignore him. When he is quiet reward him with a treat or a toy. He will soon learn that meowing does not give him positive feedback. Same thing goes with being hyper... if you turn your back on the cat, he may learn that this is not acceptable behavior.

Good luck!

Yes, he'll calm down with age. He's technically still a kitten and still full of kitten energy. Also, how long ago was he neutered? It can take up to two months for all of the hormones to leave their bodies. If it was more recent than that, he could be itching to get out because of all those lovely male hormones;)

His meowing could very well be linked to his previous living conditions, as well. "Calling for his buddies" as you stated. He's only been in your home a week....he's insecure, unsure....basically scared. Once he settles in and learns to trust you and his surroundings, he should quiet down a bit. Just give him time and lots of love.

If you want to help calm him down, there is a product called Rescue Remedy. I've heard some people swear by it:

Don't squirt him with water. He's young, he's playful, he's in a new environment, he's used to the company of other cats. All in all quite a change for him.

Cats at about 9 months are at their playing peak. He's used to having playmates, maybe consider getting him a companion. Otherwise get him some toys, accept that young cats will be young cats and enjoy this period in his life. Before too long you'll be complaining that he never plays and is boring!!!

I think that yes, he will calm down, and quieten down, but it is going to take time. Cats are social creatures, and are often best kept in pairs (but ideally not littermates) as they will keep eachother company. I would try hard not to reward his mewing with attention- wait for a break in the chatter and then cuddle him. Try to get him to dissassociate mewing from attention, and he will find it less rewarding to do so. Also, get toys! Those big scratching tower posts are idel- and very easy to make. You just need some plywood squares, some cotton rope, and some thick cardboard tubes. You can carpet the squares of wood, use an inudstrial stapler. Fix the tubes to the squares with a staple gun, and wrap the rope tightly around them. If you are going to make it several stages high, the bottom needs to be a weighted wooden box so that it does not fall over. You can hang toys for the cat to 'bat' and play with. I like bunches of feathers myself- my cats love them! This way, he will have another focus for his activities, and you can reward him for playing with his stuff, not yours!

No probably not. My cat Karma is exactly the same. Everyone told me he would settle down once he'd been neutered/ grew up. He's now 2 and a 1/2 and is showing no signs of chilling out. Annoying it may be but aren't you glad he's not a cat that sleeps all day? As where would be the fun in that?

Gotta love cats. Sounds like he is happy with the attention and enjoys it. If he was in a house with a bunch of cats he probably is basking in the love your showing him. As he gets older he will settle down .... some. Remember, a Cat is a Kitten for the first 2 years of there live, so they love to run and play and meow ALOT, but he does it all out of love, enjoy

There is a product called Feliway now...it comes in a plug in form much the same as your plug in air fresheners only we can't smell it and it makes no whirring noise. My cat is not the friendliest of creatures in his best moments and he was making himself ill stressing about my house move and vet advised me to try a Feliway plug in which I thought was a ridiculous idea. Within a day he was out from under the bed...he started eating and much to my shock he sat right next to a screaming 6 month old without attacking him...It lasts approx 4 weeks and covers 50-70 square meters. I only plugged mine in for a week before he didnt need it anymore. Best prices are ebay...cost a lot direct from vet...
