I have a friend who knows someone who is selling a remington 700 stainless steal .300 wsm for $425 its a really good deal. But i don't really know what much about the 300 win mags or teh 300 wsm. All I know is that i'm going to be using it to hunt deer and elk. I would just like any information about .300 win mags wiether it be .300 win mag or .300 wsm. Also if you have any input on the difference, prefrence, or tech information about these calibars that would be really nice before buy this gun.
I really can't decide which one is better and with some of your input i might beable to decide alittle easier. thanks for looking

I know that it is alittle bit overkill for a deer but I don't really have that much money and want a gun big enough to hunt an elk. I would for right now just get one gun rather than two. thanks for the info, i'm still not sure which one to get but I now i have a better idea

Can you shoot it first? How many rounds have been through it? Is it well taken care of? Why is he selling it? Have you ever shot a 300 mag? (They kick!) $425 is a great price for a stainless remington 700. Do you get the scope as well? What kind of scope? Does it have the iron sights... Not needed on that gun as you will get much more precision from a scoped model and you can put a scope on any Remington 700, although you may have to remove the rear sight or get rings high enough or a scope that clears it.

Either caliber is awesome. Side note it is more of a elk, moose, caribou gun than deer as you already know. But it is also a long range platform and with some practice and skill you can make 500+shots! (A lot of practice!)

The WSM is fatter and holds less rounds in the rifle. But you usually get one maybe two shots anyway. The reloading stroke is shorter and slightly faster for the follow up shot. But with proper placement and technique you should only need that one. The WSM is new and a little harder to find ammo in out of the way places. 300 Win Mag is almost as common as 30-06! So if you get some place remote and don't have ammo (I knew I forgot something! or you need to recheck the scope) it's likely to be there!

Let me say again that on the surface $425 is a good price. If no scope you will need to add another $200 - $400 for a scope before you can take full advantage of that rifle.

Remington 300 Short Mag

I have a Remington 700BDL stainless in 300 win mag, I use it for everything from deer to moose. I have never ruined any meat on a deer and I have dropped a moose cleanly at 500 yards. It is an excellent, flat shooting, accurate firearm.
My wife has a Browning A-Bolt chambered for 300 WSM. I have shot both (helping her at the range) and the WSM does not seem to be as accurate (at 100 yards her groups are at 2 to 3 times as wide as mine...and before anyone says it, thats with me shooting from a vise) Also she occasionally has problems jamming while ejecting the spent cartridge but I'm not sure if this is a Browning problem. My advice is to go with the Remington 300 win mag and get a muzzle break, your shoulder will thank you.

300 Win Short Mag

i have been shooting a 300 win mag for many years
i have dropped elk in new mexico with no trouble but i think it is overkill for deer
there would be no noticeable difference btwen the two rounds
one small complaint i have heard was that if you are reloading and only neck size the wsm the bearing surface can cause some hanging up in the chamber due to the increased size of the case
this is not a huge problem
either one will do the job nicely on elk

The .300 Winchester Magnum has been around longer and so ammo may be easier to find. The .300 Winchester Short Magnum is newer but (at least on paper) every bit as effective as the older magnum.

Practically (or not), the WSM will recoil a wee bit less (less than 2 felt lbs. of energy) than the older magnum. The other hunter (John K) is right, either magnum is a tad large for deer but not unheard of. Final consideration:

For $425 in stainless steel? What are you waiting for, man!

the ballistics are really close between the two. the bennifit of the short mag is it is faster to load a second shot into the chamber. there is less pull for the bolt therefore making it faster. both the win mag and the win short mag are excellent rounds. i personally am looking for a new .300 wsm

Go with the Short Mag. It does everything a Win. mag will do in and more in a better package. It is a flatter shooting round as well. Should be enough to handle most big game in North America.

Its really about personal preference and which of the 2 ballistic stats you like more. I would chose the 300 win mag hands down again personal preference. If its good enough for our military its good enough for me..
