This depends on what you want and price, you should visit a shop that sells both and is impartial and ask as many of the senior people there (not the students) which they think is best, if you get mixed feedback go online to look for reviews if not decide on the one that gets the best feedback in the shop.

If you must have Plasma, go for the Panasonic. Sony has stopped their plasma manufacturing for almost two years now and thus wont support the earlier ED versions. They dont have a HD compatible Palsma...never had and all ED stands for is Enhanced Definition which translates to 480P ( which is still standard definition and without an ATSC converter, it wont be good for anything after February 17th or 19th 2009 anyway nless you haev a digital receiver connected to it. If you like the Sony Bravia XBR series , it is still an LCD, but its picture quality rivals the best Plasma out there and will undoubtedly outlast it by 15 - 20 years

I don't believe Sony offers a plasma set, but their LCD HDTVs are about the best you can get. I would choose the Sony. If you want a plasma, then consider the Pioneer Elite.
