is it so people have something to hope for? to believe?

are religous people trying to make the world a better or worse place?

is religion good or bad?

i ask this because there are so many religious nuts on here so i'm sure a lot of people will answer with bollocks such as 'our lord in heaven...' etc etc etc.

the way i see it, people have to have something to believe. personally, i believe in myself, god doesnt do my work for me, he doesnt stop me from getting stabbed or shot on the street....

when my brother was 8 a religous nut went up to him and said he is in a wheelchair because he was a sinner and had sinned in previous lives...now is that religion?

i share exactly the same point of view as you. the fact is that for many people reality is sad( i know, sometimes some things or thoughts can bring you down), and having something to believe in, somewhere to go, and someone to thank or blame, makes all a lot easier to bear. i choose to be real. i mean, i first of all believe in myself, and sometimes come up with my own little belief system, but it never holds up. live like there is no tomorrow, Savior every moment of your life...happiness is not in a building, and goodness is not what is written in a book.

religion is the root of all problems and evil. there is war, because of religion, it has always been a competition for who's telling the truth and who's lying, who's better than who. if you don't believe in what i say I'll kill you...NICE...this is what religion is and what it will always be...the world will succumb to man's greed, ignorance, and stupidity. even if many individuals are intelligent, crowds are always stupid...

all i want to say to all the people out there is live and let live.

This is indeed a very good question.

I think there are so many religions in this world because there is something good that they are trying to copy or improve upon. The only problem is that the perfect cannot be changed but yet man in his sinful nature cannot accept that.

Does man have a sinful nature? For sure he has. A banana tree has a banana tree nature whether or not it bears fruits. The sinful nature causes us to sin - the only question is how much.

Is religion good or bad? Depends on whose perspective I would say. If you see it from a moral point of view, I think there can be little doubt that pure religion has done much good for mankind. Many charity organisations and hospitals are due to religious links.

But if we look from a perfect point of view, then there is only one perfect original religion and all others are corrupted copies or versions and are of no use to mankind in finding God.

Strange that you choose to believe in yourself with the logic that you gave. It was precisely this logic that brought me to God. I realised that believing in myself was totally useless because I could not control any part of my life. I could not make myself taller. I could not tell if I could survive the next minute. So what was the hope in believing in myself. I chose to believe in an Almighty God and lo and behold, things began to happen.

The problem is that we choose to see what we want to see. We choose to believe what we want to believe. Previously, I would not believe in the crap that there were angels or God looking after me but after my change of view, things seem to really look like they did afterall.

Concerning your brother, indeed that is a religious nut. The fact is that we have all sort of problems not because of anything we had done but because this whole world is cast in sin. And until the world is redeemed, bad things will happen to good people and vice versa. There is no justice in this present world because we function in a sinful world and sin corrupts everything.

Generally, in my classification, religion is man-made. True "religion" is actually about relationship between God and us.

I believe that there are so many religions because there are so many different point of views.

I would like to say that I believe in reincarnation and that what ever evil or malice you did in this life you will have to pay for in the next life but, I would never tell someone especially an 8 year old child that. I would try to befriend the child and help him with the lessons he goes through in life and spiritual growth. No one should ever have the right to talk to anyone that way especially an 8 year old child.

It because of greed.... the real truth.
Religion is good if used correctly.

I assure you Jesus would agree with me, that you don't need to be in a Religion to know and have a personal relationship with God- Jesus.

God works in so many ways, but this religion nut you speak of, sounds like he has a lot to learn, there is a lot of people out there with their perspectives. We are all sinners

There's a lot of ignorance, so yes, that is one reason.

But I think the biggest reason is that people really want to believe they are special and that they will live forever. I think if the major religions didn't promise an afterlife, few would subscribe to them.

About your brother. I have had a similar incident. My son was born deaf and several of my own family members (Catholic converts and Protestants) have strongly insinuated in some way that it is God's punishment because I don't believe. Sick, sick stuff, really.

I would say that the person who went up to your brother was just what you said - a nut. That is not religion, that is a nut.

My answer to why there is so much religion is simple. It is because there are so many different people in the world. Just like there are so many different foods exist in the world for people to choose form, I believe God suggested different religions to different people so that more people could get to know him (her, it - your call).

there is so much religion because people need to believe in something. most people are stupid so they believe in stupid things. the truth is no one knows what the truth is and what is out there. so it's easier to picture a god to explain it all. you can either believe that kind of crap or try to see for yourself. religion is good in a way, if you pray it means you get to your subconscious and you get most of the work you don't have any power on, done. now it all depends on how open-minded you are. cheerio

My friend, religion is BAD news. It is tradition and it makes no sincere change.

I am so sorry someone told your brother at 8 that he was in a wheelchair because he was a sinner - that is NOT what the Lord Jesus wants His people to do. Gosh, its in the Bible that not all people are ill or cripple because of sin, so the person who said that is accountable to the Lord Jesus Christ for harming a little child. On behalf of Jesus, I apologise that one of His followers could so mislead your brother and yourself, and many others.

I have a personal, wonderful relationship with Jesus Christ. I do not follow tradition or laws.

My friend, I pray that He will show you truth and give you peace.

i believe it's because there has gotta be something else...we can't just be here for nothing. As horrible as the world is today...people need something to exscape to...and so many times have they fell. They make new religions, and hope that that is what is going to bring about peace....unfortunatley....that wont bring peace...because we have freewill.

Because so many people are intellectual lightweights, lacking the ability to reason and think critically. They have emotional world views and they tend to be undereducated. They indoctrinate their children with these mind viruses, just as they were. Without the intellectual ability to escape this "mind trap" the process goes on....and on...continuing throughout the generations.
