The bare aluminum looks so industrial to say the least.I was wondering if anyone has expereince with painting them instead of replacing them. Does it look better?

Yes they can be painted. Dust the frames then clean with paint thinner then clean with acetone. Apply an oil base primer that does not dry fast. When completely dry apply two coats of an exterior oil base semi gloss paint. Keep the windows open enough during drying so the surfaces do not make contact. Don't use a water base product because those styles of windows compress hard when closed, and with the plasticizers in semigloss water base paint, the paint will always stick to itself and pull itself off in places.
