Every single time my husband is in New York (and he's been going since his first trip at 18), he rides the Staten Island ferry. If you time it right -- at dusk -- you can get a magnificent view of the city skyline all lit up.
But way before that, go to a delicatessan, buy a picnic lunch -- or brunch -- and take it to Central Park (I like to visit the John Lennon/ Strawberry Fields monument on the park's upper west side).
The rest depends on your likes. I always go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (great collection) and the Guggenheim (if there's a special exhibition).
Our daughter used to make a beeline for that super duper toy store FAO Schwartz (I may have misspelled it! Sorry!) at the bottom of Central Park across from the tony Plaza Hotel (supposedly a great place to have "high tea").
Greenwich Village is also a gas with all sorts of very special and particular shops and boutiques, vintage clothing stores and cool art galleries.
In any case, wear good walking shoes because New York is definitely a walking city. (Pick one Avenue, fashionable Fifth, for instance, and walk it.) You can cover miles and not even realize it (until much. much later...like the next day!).
And it is absolutely one of the best places in the world to "people watch". We actually saw Sarah Jessica Parker near the Plaza where she was filming an episode of Sex in the City. She graciously gave our daughter her autograph and totally made that particular visit.
Have a fantabulous time! I wish I was going with you!

One day is just about a waste of time. Depending at the matters you experience, you would take the Circle Line excursion across the island, well view of statue of Liberty as good as many different fascinating land marks. One day isn't sufficient to move by way of even one small museum, you would do the Empire State Building however the whole lot will quite simply be a blur in case you take a look at it in at some point. once more your private pursuits will have to dictate the matters you notice and do. Back within the 70's & eighty's I have the possibility to talk over with NYC commonly and I quite adored going into the town, would do broadway indicates, museum, garment district many small artwork galleries and so a lot more. Have no longer been in approximately two decades however nonetheless have exceptional recollections of being there.

The best thing for firsttimers in a city is to book a guided tour. The rest of the time is up to you! Maybe a museum or two? Some shopping? and/or a theater or musical at the night. Johan.

Go to the Museum of Natural History, it will blow your mind. Allow 4 hours to barely scrape the surface, 8 hours to have fun, or 2 days to get the most minimal idea of what is even there.

I believe there's a tour of the Federal Reserve Building in the morning for free. I'd also do a Yahoo search for "free nyc" and see what comes up.

there are so many things in NY, you need to narrow it down a little.
a museum, art gallery, shopping, broadway show, coney island, ground zero?
what do you like??
