ROME (Oct. 22) - Pope Benedict told scientists on Saturday that by believing only in "artificial intelligence" and technology they risked the fate of the mythical Icarus, whose home-made wings melted when he flew too close to the sun.

"Contemporary life gives pride of place to an artificial intelligence ever more enslaved to experimental tecnhiques, thereby forgetting that all science should safeguard mankind and promote his tendency to authentic goodness," the Pope said.

The German-born Pope, a theology professor and an enforcer of Vatican dogma before his election as pontiff last year, has voiced his concerns about some areas of scientific research that clash with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

Like his predecessor Pope John Paul II, Benedict is against stem cell technology, which researchers say could help cure serious illnesses but the Church opposes it because it often relies on cells from embryo tissue.

Should scientific research be faith based?

Actually the two go hand in hand. God created the Universe and all of the scientific "laws" in it. Man only discovers them.

Scientists, whether they realize it or not, are ultimately searching for God. The search for the fundamental particle of the Universe, the interaction of energy, gravity, time, space, etc., are really man searching for origins and the one who created it all.

As a scientist, I believe in the Big Bang and evolution. As a Christian, I must ask who set these events in motion.

Scientific research always involves things that can be proven. No religion can prove that there is a man living in a cloud. The Pope is more or less saying, "Stay away from science as it has the ability to prove that we are full of sh-t". The recent discovery of the 3.3 million year old human-hobbit skull in Ethiopia proves that the Bible is the word of man pretending to be God. Ever try to get a religion to talk about dinosaurs? The day will come when intelligent life is discovered on other planets. These beings better know about God, Jehovah, Jesus, Allah, Buddha, Krishna, Vishnu, etc. etc. or the religions will be chased out of town. Science is always making new discoveries and that's a threat to religion.

No and all his concerns about science and religion is the same as medicine and money. There are probably cures for cancer, diabetes, and most life threatening diseases out there, but there is no money in curing the diseases. There is a lot of money in treating and keeping the disease under control for a person's entire life. Same goes for stem cells and religion. If all ailments can be cured, then why would anyone pray to their god to cure the disease they have when they can just go to their doctor and have it fixed? Then all churches would lose out on the faithful and all the "donations" they give. That's why all religions try to keep science away, it's the same like a magician, you don't want to reveal all your secrets, and the secret being that god doesn't exist.
