No offense, but the point everyone is missing is Ramadan is the month during which the Holy Qur'an was first revealed to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). In fact, it is during the month of Ramadan that all of the holy books were revealed to their respective Messengers (i.e. Torah to Moses, Psalms to David, Gospels to Jesus - peace be upon them). It is the month during which the Holy Qur'an was sent down from God's Throne to Bait-ul-Mahmur (sp?) - a house in the third heaven which looks similar to the Kaaba in Mecca. The Qur'an was housed in that house for thousands of years until God commenced the revelation to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) during Ramadan.

So to commemorate and obey God's command, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset and increase their remembrance of God and charity to the poor and less privileged during this Holy Month.

Hope this helps.

Ramadan is derived from the Arabic root word ramida or arramad intense scorching heat and dryness, especially the ground. From the same root there is ramdaa, sunbaked sand, and the famous proverb: "Kal Mustajeer minar Ramadaa binnar" - to jump out of the frying pan into the fire. And in a hadith the Messenger of Allah (saas) said : "The prayer of repenters is due when the young camel can feel the sun's heat early in the morning." Thus, the Ramadan is so called to indicate the heating sensation in the stomach as a result of thirst. Others said it is so called because Ramadan scorches out the sins burns the ground. Some said it is so called because the hearts and souls are more readily receptive to the admonition and remembrance of Allah during Ramadan, ad the sand and stones are receptive to the sun's heat. The framers of this beautiful language may have been inspired by Allah (SWT) in naming this month Ramadan. Otherwise, the relation between the heat and its properties is miraculously similar to that of Ramadan. While the heat represents the matter that helps shape, form, and mold virtually every matter, from metal and plastics, to plants and living cells-Ramadan undoubtedly helps a serious believe remold, reshape, reform, and renew his physical and spiritual disposition and behaviour.

There are as many meanings of Ramadan as there are Muslims. The third "pillar" or religious obligation of Islam (submission in English), fasting has many special benefits. Among these, the most important is that it is a means of learning self-control. Due to the lack of preoccupation with the satisfaction of bodily appetites during the daylight hours of fasting, a measure of ascendancy is given to one's spiritual nature, which becomes a means of coming closer to God. Ramadan is also a time of intensive worship, reading of the Qur'an, giving charity, purifying one's behavior, and doing good deeds. For Muslims (Submitters), Ramadan is not merely a holiday, but an opportunity to gain by giving up, to prosper by going without and to grow stronger by enduring weakness. As a secondary goal, fasting is a way of experiencing hunger and developing sympathy for the less fortunate, and learning to thankfulness and appreciation for all of God's bounties. Fasting is also beneficial to the health and provides a break in the cycle of rigid habits or overindulgence.

Ramadan (in Arabic: رمضان, Ramadhan) – or Ramzan in several countries – is the ninth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, established in the year 638. It is considered the most venerated, blessed and spiritually-beneficial month of the Islamic year. Prayers, fasting, charity, and self-accountability are especially stressed at this time; religious observances associated with Ramadan are kept throughout the month.

According to the fuqaha – Islamic jurists and legislators – in 2006 the month of Ramadan (1427 AH) began on September 23 (Middle East, East Africa, North Africa and West Africa) and September 24 elsewhere (including Turkey, North America, Southeast Asia, and the rest of the Middle East). In Pakistan, excluding some parts of North-West Frontier Province (NWFP), it was September 25. In NWFP it was September 25. It will last through October 22 or October 23.

Ramadan is the Arabic name for a month in the calendar year. Ramadan is a month of self sacrifice...sacrifice of comforts of life. Muslims practice fasting for feelings of sympathy and commemoration of those who cant eat everyday or have very little or no basic human needs met on a daily basis. This also unites brothers and sisters in Islam through out the world. Eid Mubarak

It's the ninth month of the Muslim lunar calendar. During the month they fast from dawn until dusk. During the hours of fasting they cannot eat, drink, engage in sexual intercourse or smoke. Kids who haven't reached puberty yet don't need to fast but it's pretty much obligatory after the age of about 15.

Hope that helped! =)
