Assuming that the GI had full participation in SGLI the insurance payment will be $400k. There is also a death benefit gratuity pegged at one month's base pay though I do believe there is a minimum payment there now of $6k.
If the member was retirement eligible -- 20 or more years of service -- the spouse will also receive Survivor Benefit Plan payments at 55% of the member's base pay. This will stop if the spouse remarries before age 55.
If there are children under 21 still single and living at home, DIC may be payable on their behalf. That used to vary depending upon the member's rank at death but I believe it has been pegged at a flat rate now.
If the member had sufficient creditable employment under Social Security -- generally 10 years in the workforce, including military service -- and if there are children involved the family may also collect Survivor's Benefit from Social Security up through age 21 or age 23 if a full-time student.
Ignore the idiot with the mean-spirited response above. If he'd been one of my troops, he'd be on Additional Duty for the next 30 days!

From what we were told right before myhusband deployed....the family gets 12K immediately to cover burial expenses. But the life insurance depends b/c there is a certain amount that you can get without paying extra or you can have some money deducted from each check and put it up higher. We have that so I'm not sure what the basic amount is. The Army Times website has a money section that tells all about benefits etc so it moght be on there.

From experience its 400 thousand, for the simple fighting rank soldier, but that doens't make right the loss. My husband cousin, bless his sole, was killed in Iraq last March. There is a member of the military that handles everything, from the moment of face to face notification...with a small team of military who will accompany the body, until the soldier is buried underground. The soldier is under 24 hour guard. It's terrible and tragic for the family, but the military goes above and beyond to help the family through this very difficult time. This relatives funeral was highly covered by the new, and present were the Patriot Guards, who were simply wonderful! 250 men and women who carried hundreds of US Flags, forming a tunnel as we left the funeral for the grave site, to shield us from the protestors. I don't like this war, but the Military, did a simply wonderful and detailed job of supporting the entire family through this very difficult time.

SGLI actually goes up to $440k. It depends on who he named on his Page 2 as his beneficiary and how much he selected to receive. This has nothing to do with rank. The only difference is the price of SGLI on a monthly basis by rank, but the coverage remains the same.
The military also covers burial expenses up to $12,000 depending on the circumstances.
If the service member committed suicide or went AWOL, of course the family will get nothing.

Chris C. nailed it on the head. But I also heard that they kick out 5K$ immediately to cover burial expenses in addition to SGLI.
