My friend just got her kids back out of foster care in Jan 06, the kids were ages 8 and 10. Well, the kids were taken for "dirty house" issues. My friend has cleaned her house and is doing great! Well, the other day while she was napping, the 10 year old was playing with the 8 year old in the middle of the den. According to the 10 year old, he was gonna karate kick his 8 year old bro, the 8 year old drawed up his knee to his stomach, like a crouching position in self defense, (to block the kick) well the older boys foot hit the knee and they heard a small pop, and the older boy went crying to his mom. she felt it was broke and had her neighbor (a veteran 22 year R.N) to look at it. She thought it was broke too, but said that they don't usually put cast on, the only thing a doc could do is make a diagnosis and administer pain medicine. My friend is scared to take the boy to the hospital because of past dealings with Child Protective Services, they just left her alone. What can she do?!!

The boy is able to walk on it and isn't in any big pain as long as he doesn't put too much pressure on his toe. he has been going to school and is doing good.

Take some cottonand put it between the large toe and the second toe.Take some tape and wrap it around the large toe and the second toe. That will help support it and should make the pain a bit more bearable.I know what you mean about the CPS people(if your not a CPS employee your a pervert/abusive parent). This is a common injury I see it alot(I'm a x-ray tech) so I don't think CPS will be involved with this if she goes to a doctor.

If she is sure that it is just a toe that is broken, she would not need to take him to see a doctor. She can tape it to toe next to it to keep it from moving around which will help with the pain. He should also wear a hard shoe that will protect it unless he is in bed. If however it could possibly be a bone in the foot that is broken, he should go for ex rays. Even if it is the just the toe, if it doesn't get better and continues to swell or feel worse, she should take him to see a doctor.
Doctors know that kids get hurt. Just part of life. She shouldn't worry about it if she has to take him. In fact, if anything, that might make me take him in sooner. It is not something that is good to hide - if they were to find out later, that might not look good.
Tough call, but I'm sure she will make the right decision - she is the one with all the facts.

Normally, they wouldnt do much for it, but tape it together with the toe next to it, maybe offer some crutches, and tell her to treat him with a child pain-reliever. I have broken mine before also, and thats all they can do, it has to heal on its own. Now on the other hand, even if she just got them back, as long as her son tells them the truth, they cant call social services, unless there is a good reason they feel is was done on purpose. But, since yes they wont treat it, I would tell her, not to worry, tape it together, give him some pain reliever, and maybe keep him home from school a day or so, with it up.

For a toe, I wouldn't worry about it. The most the doc can do is tape the big toe to the one next to it, and give him ibuprofen or Tylenol if there's pain.
I know this because my husband, me and our oldest son have all broken our toes! Big ones, little ones, toes in the middle, etc...
If the kid's able to walk on it, then I wouldn't do anything about it. If he can't walk on it or complains about it hurting a lot, then I would take him to the doc's office.
Not every single injury needs a doctor...especially broken toes!

I think she should take him .. kids are kids and they do hurt themselves anyone would understand that . If her kids were not taken from her for abuse then she has nothing to worry about . take him just to be sure. I sure the neighbour is wright and they can't do anything but its better to be safe than sorry . people will wonder why she didn't take him in and that could be seen as neglect.

if she thinks the kid has broken his toe, she should take him to the hospital to get it checked out, if he was in care due to the house as oppose to neglect i cant see there will be a problem, you cant leave the kid in pain thats not fair, i am sure if she left him and he has broken it that would be a case for neglect

She needs to take him now. The injury you describe wouldn't be typical for abuse so she wouldn't be suspected there but not taking him would be considered neglect. Most likely, they wouldn't be able to actually do much for her son but she needs to have it looked at and documented for what it is before someone sees the son limping at school and starts making assumptions or accusations.

I agree she needs to take him. Better to be over cautious with a childs health than someone who appears to not care. It would be in hers and her sons best interested to have it seen to.
Good on her for fighting to get her kids back!
