Which Linux is the best to download?

I need to know what is the best version of linix to download for a child to learn and a husband that has a hard time with anything new. Also do most of the programs work on Linix or do I need a special version of the programs. I use a lot of MS programs is this a problem. Also I am using one window xp and the other compter I want to use Linux and set up a workgroup

dont download. buy it. if everybody downloads free then what will happen to software manufacturer.
