I'm getting a home bar built (would be predominantly wood), and am looking to find tips on layout, and materials, finishes.

as a contractor i have seen bars made of all types of wood and it is really a personal preference as to what you want, I like alder it looks good and is very durable, granite for the bartop is the best for looks and maintenance, most bars are built straight but if you have the space and money consider a curved bar as it adds a little more style and it allows for greater seating capacity at the bar...for the finish a couple coats of varnish will suffice unless you have a wooden bar top where people will be putting drinks, their elbows etc. then use 3 coats of spar varnish on the top. Also give some thought to the shelving behind the bar where the bottles of booze will be stored, glass wall mounted shelves look the best and are most practical to use, dont forget about the foot rail so people sitting at the bar will have a place to put their feet. good luck

make sure you leave provisions for a good sized fridge....a granite bench top is hardy and easy to keep clean....and lighting under the lip of the bar always looks good.....cheers
