It was always just a polite code of refering to reproduction in front of kids so they wouldn't understand until a parent actually sat them down and explained.

The first part of the sentence: When people want to explain to their children where babies come from, they often use the example of the birds and the bees.

The second part of the sentence: a black night gown doesn't keep you warm. So if you want to stay warm, it's not much use to wear a night gown.

So this means that it's not very useful to explain new life with the example of the birds and bees.

It is a way of saying that birds and bees have nothing really to do with explaining the facts of life just like the color of a night gown has nothing to do with keeping you warm.

sounds like it means, it has nothing to do with life. if you think about it, black night gowns wont keep you warm.
