How do you make pincurls for a retro hairstyle?

How did the women back in the day style their hair? It looks so difficult to recreate the style.

You need bobby pins, still sold today. You part a section of hair, 1 to 1 1/2 inches square, then put your index finger tip on your head at that spot and wrap the finger with the hair. Then push it off of your finger pressing it down on the head and pin it in place. It should resemble a circle of hair crossed with a bobby pin or 2 (seldom perfect).
