Apply a pressure bandage to it, and hold it tight for about 5 minutes..release very gradually..If it starts again, apply the firm pressure for another 10 minutes.. it should stop by then..No peeking, while you are applying the pressure..
You can use any soft cloth for the pressure bandage..

Depending on how much has been torn, sometimes applying something like bar soap, bakng soda etc can stop the bleeding. I have a pit bull and cuttig his nails is terrible because they're so dark, I often cut too short and cause them to bleed. Usually that helps the bleeding, if after 10 minutes it don't stop, or if it is a constant drip, I'd take him do the vet...can never be too careful, pets have feelings and are part of our families too! good luck

Dogs lose their dew claws on occasion, for various reasons. My dog was born without them. His paw may bleed for a little while, unless he's damaged his paw in another way, by cutting it, for instance. I wouldn't worry about it too much. He will probably continue to lick his 'wound' until it stops bleeding. If you try to put medicine on it or wrap his paw, he's likely to lick it off anyway. If he's bleeding profusely and it won't stop in a few hours, he may have injured himself more than you realize. If that's the case, I get him to a vet very soon.

"Is it worth a trip to the emergency vet"??? How can you even ask that question?
This is your dog, a dog who has to depend on you for everything. You owe it to your dog to have this taken care of, NOW. Dew claws are easy to injure (that's why a lot of people have them removed when their dogs are puppies).
It is very painful to the dog, even if your dog isn't acting like it's in pain (they respond differently than we would). Please, please take the dog to the vet before he injures himself anymore. They will probably remove the dew claw.
I hope your dog will be ok, good luck.

Your canines needs to pass to the vet to have the remains of the dew-claw bumped off. Ripping any nail off is amazingly painful on your canines; the proper nerve is now uncovered to the air; and could stay so till it has bumped off.

Thanks to Chetco! I got my dog too late in his life to have them removed, and I was told (by a breeder) always told me if they weren't removed then they'd catch on something and bleed to death! I have worried over those things for months!
