lofl... these answers are funny.
I guess if you can't have special guns which isn't allowed for regular citizens of US then you are a dead meat in this senario. I was thinkin if i can get some specail force's arms, then i would get some incinary granades and throw em before grizzlies and hopely they stop before reaching me or get BBQed together...lol

You pose an interesting scenario. I spent my childhood and teenage years hiking the mountains and hunting the islands of Southeast Alaska. I’ve seen some bears up close, but nothing that made me think death was imminent.

I’ll tell you what I think the right answer is in your scenario then I will tell you what I carried.

You proposed that there were 3 bears at 50 feet. Assuming they are charging at 15 MPH (a little slow, but they need time to accelerate, so I am guessing that it’ll even out), that means they are moving at 22 feet per second. At 22fps, they will be at your toes in 2.27 seconds. I am assuming that all three bears are adults or a mother with adult (2 year old) cubs.

To kill a bear charging at you (facing you), you need a bullet with power and penetration or a shot to the head with a “medium” energy bullet.

Three headshots in 2.27 seconds is impossible. Oswald supposedly shot three shots in just under 6 seconds, and even he only had one head shot out of three (not to mention there is a debate as to if that can even be done). By the time you aimed, fired, recovered from the recoil, and proceeded to the next bear, you’d be lunch. So this option is pretty much out.

If I knew I were going to shoot a bear from head to tail and needed an instant death, I’d want some serious firepower. A 50 BMG would be nice, but most rifles weight well over 20 pounds, which isn’t feasible to carry in any area a bear would live. Some of the elephant guns would be nice like the 577 Tyrannosaur, the Nitro Express series, or the 45 caliber magnums would work, but recoil would be so bad that even an experienced shooter would have trouble getting 3 shots off in 2.27 seconds, even if they were shooting from the hip. The magnum cartridges in the 30+ calibers (300 Win Mag, 338 Win mag, 450 Marlin) might offer you a prayer, but even in a semi-auto, your chances of getting 3 lethal shots off in the span of 2.27 seconds is next to impossible, even without aiming. By the time you back down to a lower recoil round like the 25 caliber rounds, the 30-30 Win and other lower power rounds, you might be able to get 3 shots off, but you probably have a better chance of marrying a super-model millionaire than dropping all three within 3 seconds.

In short, you are pretty much an appetizer no matter what.

In this particular situation, your best bet would probably be the pepper spray repellant that is made to repel bears. I have always had issues with trusting my life to an aerosol can, but it would be your best bet. The spray comes out in a cloud, so you would probably be able to hose all three down at once. If the spray blows back in your face, then you’ll never see the bears coming and you’ll be in so much pain that you probably won’t notice it when they start nibbling your legs. If you are really lucky, the bears wouldn’t like spicy food and leave you alone while you are screaming.

As grim as I make it sound, you might stand a chance, especially if it is a mother and two adult cubs. If you drop one bear, the other two might stop when they hear the gun go off (though I've never seen three adult bears together that weren't fishing or a mother with cubs). The cubs would be following their mother, not so much be charging you because you are a threat. If you drop the mother, the cubs would probably stop in their tracks.

Now, as to what I carry in bear country. If I knew I was going to be in an area with big bears, I usually carried accordingly. My fathers weapon of choice was a 338 Win Mag with heavy (250 grain I believe) Nosler Partition bullets loaded hot. My weapon of choice is a 35 Whelen (30-06 necked up to 35 caliber) with 250 grain Kodiak bullets, loaded extremely hot. I’m not sure if my load with the 35 Whelen would go through a bear nose to tail, but with the Kodiak bullets and at point blank range, it would go through most of the bear if not all the way through.

in the words of steven on Braveheart" yer fooked". but if you have 1 or maybe even 2 grizzleys charging you a 30-06 with a 220 grain bullet should work. whoever said a 30-30 your an idiot the biggest grain i ever seen was a 180, which will open way too soon and just piss it off more. with them you need deep penetration and controled mushrooming of the bullet.
those are just the facts there is no way you can kill that many bears that quick unless you have a major explosive which in turn will kill you anyway. Bears run at speeds around 35 mph 50 feet aint nothing to them.

pretty much the rest of you that mention explosives and military surplus are talking out you a**es why in the world would you be walking around with those. besides if you see 20 grizzlys at one most likely they are fishing for salmon and the least bit interested in you.

DK, you are describing a scenario where nature has turned on Mankind. Guess what? In the situation you have described, unless you have access to a heavy machine gun, you ARE OUTTA LUCK!

With conventional weaponry a 3" 12 gauge high capacity auto or pump shotgun with bear claw slugs would be your best bet, but you would need two for 20 grizzles and the ability to accurately fire both simultaneously. Good luck!

If you could reload and fire a 600 or 700 Nitro Express double rife quickly and accurately enough you might drop most of them, but... Twenty Grizzles??? And if you mean 'grizzly families (60+ mean, hungry bears),' then... You're dead-meat. LOL!

There are documented accounts of the 10mm killing bears. This is out of handgun and in one case a Glock 20. Two shots to the head killed this animal. Now I would prefer a rifle! The Marlin Guide Gun is a fair choice, and only lacks ammo capacity and speed of follow up shots. A decent semi auto, not to much recoil, large capacity, lots of practice, and quick shots one to the head of each and go back for the stragglers,... you have a chance.

Although the hastily placed claymores was awesome!

Damn if somebody didn't beat me to the bear spray! Maybe dispense spray, (slows them down) then shoot to the head!!

I know someone who killed a grizzly sow at point blank with a shotgun several years ago - he was out duck hunting and she charged him and he fired from the hip and she actually fell on him and bent the gun barrel. Had a big write up in the local paper with a picture of the bear and his gun so it was verified. The Fish and Game let him keep the pelt since it was verified self defense.

Griz don't have family groups - usually a sow with cubs and the cubs will run tail and the sow will defend.

The .444 or .450 are both outstanding rifles for waylaying bears...45-70 is great as well. Penetration and big holes=big leaks in bear=dead bear faster.
Handgun wise, for big bears there are only a couple of guns that have a chance of making him change his mind... .500 S&W, .480 Ruger, .460 S&W, and .454 Casull...in that order.
Please dear God don't go after them with anything 9mm...just gonna piss him off.
Of course, the likelyhood of a family of bears attacking you are about eighty million to one, but I understand the train of thought...
And, if you are going after black bears, you can even use smaller equipment. From a stand, you could easily take blacks with a .30-30 or even a .357 mag, though I wouldn't recommend it.

But in reality, not much of anything will really stop a grizz if he decides he wants ya. But you can dang sure make him wanna change his mind!

decide for a glock in 9mm, 40 S&W, or .45ACP. the only gadgets interior the generic homestead which will end those bullets are a bathroom and an previous metallic bath bath. they'll zip top via sheet rock and fixtures. Refrigs, washers, and dryers will decelerate yet no longer end bullets those bullets. A glock in those calibers grant average draw back for swifter shop on with up photos. considerable while against assorted human beings. As for effectiveness, you're no longer sacrificing effectiveness with the help of going with the .40 or .40 5. comments could variety on the 9mm, yet i think of its a great bullet. With the .50AE or .40 4 magazine desolate tract eagle all you get is greater draw back, much less bullets according to magazine, and greater noise. The .357 magazine desolate tract eagle is interior the comparable skill type via fact the glock calibers. The glock is a pair of million/2 the fee of the desolate tract eagle. A glock is going for with reference to the comparable fee as on AK-40 seven and the desolate tract eagle is going for around the fee of an M-sixteen/AR-15. the two are greater efficient for the area you describe. Sorry yet I won't touch a, that's greater efficient AK-40 seven / M-sixteen debate.

A .338 or .416 Rigby, for one bear. For 3-20 bears, 20 other shooters with 20 other guns, and that still may not work. Flamethrower maybe.

What you need is the semi-automatic clip fed Barrett rifle. It will punch through an engine block. There are reports of the .50 cutting a man in half.

10 rounds in a clip and it has the recoil of a shotgun.

It will easily handle a bear.

Semi-auto 8 gauge shot gun but you would probably want slugs not buck shot. This is an elephant gun so it should be able to stop bears. I'm not really sure they make a semi-auto but if they did it would be ideal for your predicament. Otherwise climb a tree :0
