In my opinion, AVG. Even the free one works wonders.

It has detected viruses that weren't detected by McAfee and Norton. It's great. Plus it's free!

Consumer Reports rates McAfee as best buy because it is easier to use. None of the info in Consumer Reports seems to be based on an actual virus attack though.

An antivirus program is important and is not something to trust freeware with. Pay for it because it is worth it. Norton Antivirus by Symantec does not cause virus like problems on a computer. What it does is tighten up security. It can also create drag on your system while it is doing it's automatic scan.

You will also need to disable most antivirus programs when downloading new programs. If you don't, the load will go very slowly, and some portions of the new program may not function properly. As soon as you are done downloading, you enable the antivirus program again.

Personally, I prefer Norton. My husband and I have four computers and have used it for years, and never have a problem. I've had warnings that a virus has been quarantined, but Norton isolates it immediately and the computer remains safe with Norton.

I know someone who worked in IT at a utility company that used McAfee. McAfee did not stop a virus from infecting their system. Once they got rid of the virus, they switched to Norton Antivirus by Symantec and have not had problems since.

Norton also has a Go-Back feature so you can revert back to a time before the virus to restore your system files. It is the highest rated antivirus program out there.

Norton and McAfee are the best, if you want to pay for your anti-virus software. What I would suggest though is using AVG free. Its virtually as good as both of those, and its completely free of charge. Now, Norton and McAfee do offer other features to their software that AVG does not. AVG is just anti-virus software. If you want all the perks of the expensive services, I'd go hunting on www.download.com

lol...............To tell the truth, If you are using Windows. I think Microsoft Windows One Live Care is the best, I mean who could fix your windows application better than Windows themselves. there's a free 90day trial right now. However you don\t want to have any illegal software on your computer,,,(i.e. applications of microsoft that are copied.) But the software offers backup-anti virus, anti spyware, advanced firewall operations and other tools for your system.
