I had 4 children born overseas in the 1980's and 1990's while I was in the navy. One in Japan, one in Spain and 2 in the Philippines.

You need to file what's called a Report of Birth Abroad with the US embassy in Mexico or at one of the US Consulates. You'll be asked to prove...

1. You are an American citizen.
2. The baby is really yours.
3. The baby was born in Mexico.

The longer you wait the more difficult it will be.

PS. The Immigration Services have absolutely nothing to do with it. Everything will be taken care of by the American Embassy or Consulate in Mexico, including issuing a passport and social security card for the baby.

If you are an American citizen, then your daughter is an American citizen no matter where she was born. You need to contact the nearest US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office. What you need to get is a Certificate of Birth Abroad. This will serve as proof of citizenship. I would suggest you use that to get her a passport, as a passport is much easier to carry around than a certificate.

Mr. fourmorebeers doesn't know what he is talking about! You should register your baby's birth with the US government as soon as possible to get documentation to prove her US citizenship. Your daughter IS a US citizen, if you are. You just need to register her birth with the US government and the sooner you do it, the easier it is. Go to the government website (I put it below here) and locate a Citizenship office near you and give them a phone call and they will tell you how to register your daughter's birth. Good luck and congratulations on your new baby daughter!

If you really are an american citizen then she has until she is 21 to claim that citizenship, if not then she will never be American.

File a petition in the US in favor of your child who is a Mexican citizen to become a naturalized American citizen.

Present your affidavit of support, but I will suggest to talk to an immigration lawyer. He will give you all the details. I have seen one guy, Atty. Michael Garfinkel, he can explain to you, I have watching him over the TV and these things are his specialties.
