My 9 month old african grey's beak always looks like its cracking and peeling..i dont know if this is normal or not. I asked the breeder because im so paranoid and he said that nothing was wrong. Then when i took him to get his wings trimmed the woman said he was really healthy. I dont know anyone else with a parrot so hopefully someone on here can help. thanks!

This is quite normal and should not be woried about as the birds do flake small aounts off thier beak as it is constantly growing. One of the best things to provide is a concrete perch so that the claws are worndown as well as giving the bird a hard ebrasive surface to rub its beak on.
More hints and care sheets are available on me web site.
I own a pet store

If it isnt all over the entire beak then it is normal. They have to shed some and scrape some or it will over grow. Make sure your bird has things to chew on and destroy like wooden bird toys you get from the pet shop. You cant use just any wood as some of it is toxic to birds. I have an African Grey and have owned many birds and all parrots do this. Dont worry.

The best thing you can do is purchase a book called The Guide To A Well Behaved Parrot. You can get it at amazon. It is the best book on parrot health and behavior and all aspects of parrots that you can find. I think all stores and breeders should send a copy of this home with the birds they sell.

This happens to each of my birds as well. When I first noticed it I took the cockatoo to the vet worried it was ill. Turns out that it is a normal process (as long as not exsessive) preventing overgrowth of the beak.
To help with the natural trimming of the beak buy good quality parrot toys for your bird to chew. This will not only help trim the beak but your bird will be entertained for hours.

Keep a watch on it. Often, birds' beaks peel. It could be a sign of a nutritional deficiency, but a lot of times, the edges of the beak aren't smooth like the rest of the beak and it's perfectly normal.

If you are really worried take him to a vet. i have an african grey and she loves to rub her beak on stuff so its normal to have scratches and alittle pealing as long as no flesh or bleeding is exposed. also if you get some organic aloe vera plant ( its imortant that its organic, pesticides can kill your bird) and rub alittle of the juices on the beak once a week it migh help heal it. also you can give your bird 100% aloe vera juice once a week or so for its heath. i give mine about a soda cap full everynow and then.

you want to make sure that your parrot is getting enough calcium and other nutrients....try a cuddle bone or calcium block...I sometimes oil my grey's beak with vegetable oil if it looks really dry
