If you haven't already, take him to the vet for some routine tests and bloodwork just to make sure he's ok physically. He may have developed allergies or some skin problems that are making him feel sickly.
The vet will also be able to explain his behaviors to you. A lot of older dogs do spend more time alone and resting, but you should make certain that it's not for some physical reason that he's hiding out. Good luck!

Some times with older dogs they will seek refuge if there is alot of activity in or around the house. He is going under the bed because the bed simulates a den. And dogs are a naturally denning animal and they will go there to feel safe and secure. 10 years old is not that old for a dog as long as they have been properly cared for i.e (Diet, and proper vet care). So just give him some space if he wants it and love on him like there's no tomorrow.

It's not necessarily a health issue. More likely, something about the environment around him has changed, and he doesn't like it. Dogs generally hide when they're afraid or nervous.

my dog started going under the bed when she neared death. They like to hide and be alone when they go thru this even if they used to be at your side day and night like my dog.

Time for a check up at the vet, dogs will hide when they are getting ready to die, or when they are feeling sick. I hope your friend is ok.

Get your friend to a vet and checked out. Could be depression, Illness or could be dying of old age. Has someone hurt him? Is he scared?
