It is. You just have to deal with the consequences.

I just moved out of Florida this past May. I am now living in South Jersey. I have to say that the men in South Jersey have great manners. Since I have been here there has not been one instance that a man in front of me did not hold a door open for me, young or old. It doesn't matter if you are 50 feet away, if it is obvious you are going to enter the same place they are, they hold that door. Before I had my washer and dryer installed in my new place I had to use the laundry mat about three times. Every time I got out of my car with the basket, some man came running over to open the door to the laundry mat for me. One man was clear down at the other end of the little strip mall & saw me getting out of may car with the basket and jumped up from a stooped position he was in to rush over & get that door. Their mothers and fathers raised them right. I can't say that for the men in Florida. It's not even 50/50 there.

Good behaviour is optional, I much prefer it to bad behaviour any day.

No, it is not optional. That is the trouble with our society today. Everyone thinks everything is optional. There are laws to protect us from people who think they can do whatever they want. It should not not a conscious choice, something we sit down and think over, and then decide to do whatever, and accept the consequences. To rob a bank, or not, or blast your stereo at two a.m., or not, to harrass someone or not, do not need choices. We used to have a name for people who sat down and weighed out the consequences of bad behavior, then did it anyway.
The name was criminal.

Good behaviour is optional and it seems to be going out of fashion!

I suppose it really depends on what you mean by "good", but if you are referring to general courtesy, gentilesse and good manners then it's really worthwhile to use them - they just make life so much more pleasant for everyone else.

Good behaviour is always optional; an adult, courteous person simply chooses to refrain from hurting others.

You must behave yourself if you want to be invited out again by your friends! Good behaviour is relative to the company you keep, and if you have friends from other cultures, you must adhere to their rules or risk offending them. Its all about being considerate. If someone is rude to you, show some class and respond in a respectful, dignified way and behave yourself young man!!

Unfortunatly, good behavior has not only become optional, but almost non-existant in the United States. I've always believed that if you want to be treated with courtesy and respect, you have to be respectful and courteous to other people. I guess my parents taught me well.

Its quite difficult to hide what is natural.

Why would you think twice about demonstrating good behavior?
Its your passport to good relationships with other people plus it distances you away from trouble.

Just don't overdo it.

I'm afraid I am a bit old fashioned and belive it shouldn't be good or bad behavior, just behavior. everyone was raised with manners and such, so it always flabbergasts me when no one uses them.

It is. You just have to know your morals and choose them. You gotta weigh the benefits and consequences of the decisions you make.
