well first off they couldnt answer you becuase they dont know. the door to door folks only know a small amount that they have been trained to recite for you, and secondly he couldnt have been baptized for his father because that would do nothin. if the guy is dead and didnt accept christ then hes in hell. thats what the bible says black and white. there is no way around it, well no godly way around it

I'm a Mormon and can answer your question, but I can't guarantee you will like or accept the answer. First of all Mormons believe that the “fullness of the gospel” has been brought forth only in these latter days. This includes baptisms for the dead as well as other temple ordinances. There is nowhere in the Book of Mormon that suggests that the people in ancient America had any knowledge of these ordinances, nor have Mormons clamed that they did.

Lamoni's father was trying to kill his own son. Murder is a heinous act, and it is not easy to be forgiven of such a sin. Ammon was warning Lamoni's father that if he died with murder in his heart, he could not be saved. If we assume that these ancient americans had the doctrine of baptism for the dead, what difference would that make? Just because someone is baptized on behalf of a murderer does not mean that the murderer is forgiven of murder. Most people, whether or not they are members of the Lord's church, know that murder is a very evil act. God holds us accountable for sinning against what we know to be true. Lamoni's father knew that murdering his innocent son was an evil act. That's why Ammon gave the warning "if thou shouldst fall at this time, in thine anger, thy soul could not be saved."
