Generally speaking, you do not need a license to have a handgun in your own house. Aside from that, you may have other issues here.

It depends on what you do with it when you open the door. If it is in a holster on your hip, fine. If you are just holding it in your hand down by your side, make no threatening comments or gestures, should be fine.

If you are holding it up, pointing it at them, gesturing with it, making threatening comments, etc., then you could be in trouble. Or, if the person at the door is an city inspector, fire personnel, police officer, etc., it would probably be a very bad idea.

If it is someone you don't like and who doesn't like you, even if you don't do any of those things, they might say you did if they want to cause trouble. If things are at the level where the dislike makes you want to answer the door with a gun, you should probably just not answer the door and call the police to have them trespassed.

With the exception of the few areas, like New York city, where handguns are banned, you can answer your door with a handgun in your hand, OF COURSE, it is legal. A concealed weapons license is only for when you are not in your own house, in public areas. Many here will say you can't but they are totally wrong. Now, what you do after answering the door maybe another thing entirely.

Most police departments, in big cities, will figure out something for you to be charged with, even though it is legal to carry a gun in your house and always has been.

" Someone you don't like rings your doorbell and you answer it"

The fact that you said that would really screw you as far as self defense as your reason for using the hand gun, sounds more pre-meditated to me.

Are you that paranoid? Having a gun for protection is an absolute and a right. However, why do you really have the gun? Who and why do these people scare you? Maybe you need to move and change your lifestyle.

What are the state laws concerning handguns in your state? why not just keep the weapon concealed in its holster and if the person threatens you, make them aware you have a gun on you.

RJ gave the most complete answer possible. The only thing I can add is that if you are a convicted felon, you cannot possess a firearm anywhere.

Concealed weapons permits are only for while you are out in public. What you do on your property is your business. . I bet that if you do that you don't get many repeat callers.
