There is no worm in Tequila, or at least there isn't supposed to be. Purists say the worm belongs only in a related product called Mescal. Strictly speaking Mescal is a generic term meaning any distillate of the many species of Agave (or Maguey) plant, of which Tequila is included. Today however Mescal is popularly understood to mean a product bottled in the region around the city of Oaxaca.

The worm in question is the Agave worm, which is actually a butterfly larva. It's bright coral colour turns to pink in the Mescal and some producers say that it enhances the flavour and colour of the drink. Occasionally you will see a white worm in Mescal this is a worm that lives in the leaves of the Agave and is often used as a substitute to the butterfly larva by some producers however connoisseurs complain that the white worm is not as tasty as the red one!

Specifically it is MezCal Tequila. Usually produced by Monte Alban. It comes with a salt flavor packet attached to it. Be careful this stuff is not Jose Cuervo. The bottles have a gold and red label.

It is mezcal, not tequila as everyone keeps saying. Difficult to find, but a good drink if memory serves correctly.

mesqual is the drink with the worm in it. It is not techincally tequilla because it is not made with a blue agave plant. It actually is usually a cheaper version of tequilla.
