It's really difficult. I believe that Symantec still makes a program called Norton Utilities.
When Windows deletes a file, it erases the first letter of the filename. If the area where the file existed, it may be possible to recover it. With Norton Utilities, you have to search the disk for the file. When found, you replace the first letter of the filename, and that should recover the file.
I haven't done this in quite a while, so I'm not absolutely certain that it works the same way with XP, but you migh give it a try. Norton Utilities is included in Norton System Works.

Yes you can.
When a file is deleted from your computer, its contents aren’t immediately destroyed. Windows simply marks the hard drive space as being available for use by changing one character in the file table so that the file entry won’t be displayed in My Computer or a commandline DIR command, etc. If you manage to start an undeletion process before Windows uses that part of the hard drive to write a new file, all you have to do is set that flag back to “on,” and you get the file.
The sooner you try to restore a file, the more successful you’ll be.

When you delete a file, Windows changes the file's entry in the file information table, so it looks like the file is deleted. There are programs which can fix the file information table to get back some files.
Not all files can be recovered because some of them might have been overwritten by newly written files. Try using this program:

Yes they can be totally recalled in most cases even if deleted, but it requires special software. People should remember this if they use their computer at work and write certain things or keep pictures they would prefer other people don't see --- the computer belongs to the employer and he can invade your privacay all he wants to. I've lost count of employees who have been fired for keeping **** on their computer and thought they were safe because they erased the files.

Yes, as long as you have not written over the data. There is a program... believe it is called "Get it Back" or something to that effect. You can do a search for other undelete programs.

SHut down the computer immediately and send the disk to a forensic disk recovery company. It will be expensive.
