i know kanji is typically top to bottom (vertical)...just wondering...

No, more and more often Kanji and Katakana characters are written horizontally in Japan. But, it is more traditional and realistic if they are vertical.

Of course it does if you want to be authentic and correct. Also it matters what kanji you choose....they will have different meanings in Chinese or Japanese. Have you ever seen pictures of Japanese girls wearing t-shirts with strange English on them (engrish.com) ???? Same goes for Kanji! Many of my Japanese friends have to hold back their laughter at some tattoos they have seen.

I dont know... does it matter if I write the letter "A, B, or C" sideways????
