I have 2 spkrs up front, and want to put the 2nd pair behind where we sit, the width is evenly spaced. The sitting area for us is right in the middle distance from front to back speakers. Should the "back" ones be @ earshot level while sitting, or should they be above the heads. Just curious....thanx audiophiles!!!

Put them slightly behind where your head will be and a few feet above your head (about 6 or 7 feet off the ground). The speakers should be facing strait at each other, not angled down at you, or at your ear level. This will provide the most realistic surround sound experience. For detailed info on home theater speaker placement, and where I learned this from check out the links in my sources. Good luck with your setup!

All of these answers are right and wrong.

It depends on the receiver (surround sound processor) manufacturer's equipment design and the speaker manufacturer's design. Some receivers have auto volume level setting, some don't. Some speakers are designed to have a wide sound dispersion, some not.

Check your receiver manual or web site for it's suggestions and your speakers web site or manual for placement suggestions.

If neither work then you should go with what you think sounds the best from the other suggestions.

Front ones at head level and surrounds up higher. You don't want to really be able to tell that the surrounds are there so put them above and behind your head.

You got it. The speakers sound best
when their "musical center" (i.e. at the
tweeter's level or between the tweeter
and the woofer) is centered at your
ear's listening position.
