It infers one was borne by a female dog. So it's really rather peurile, and not to be taken seriously, unless one thinks one's mother might have been a *****. They're supposed to be fighting words, but why would anyone bother? When people feel guilty or defensive, of course, they always become aggressive - so if one reacts to such idiocies it can only be because one is not really sure of one's self, or one's mother. To direct the same cuss at an inanimate object like a car, or an event, as it sometimes is, only shows a lack of vocabulary, or an inability to deal with frustration - both of which are infantile and pathetic. There are some great curses n Greek, Arabic and other languages, but English, so extensive in most things seems rather impoverished in curses (and words for love). Which may be why expressions like SOB develop, especially in USA.

A female dog is called a ***** so when you're called a son of a ***** it refers to you having a dog's mentally and being as low as an animal.
Some people take offense at this as they think its their mothers being insulted but meanwhile back at the ranch...
