I think that tips should be outlawed and the restaurants should pay the servers a decent living wage based on their experience and professionalism instead of having them suck up to the customers that treat them rudely those customers should be shown the door and bared from ever returning, also a rude clustly server should not only not receive a tip but should get reprimanded and fired for a set number of infractions.I am sick of subsidizing restaurants low pay for bad service with tips that is why I eat at home and when I do venture out I go to fast food places and yes I ignore the tip jar at the counter.

Depends on the person. Ignorance, bad day, just plain mean. Take your pick.

And for the guy who said waitresses don't care about customer service -- get a life! If we didn't care about customer service we would get a job somewhere else. Many of us are working to get through college, or to add a second income to the family. You think we enjoy 8 to 16 hour shifts on our feet, putting up with rude adults, undisciplined children, and unwanted sexual comments? Granted, most of our customers are great, and leave tips in accordance with the service they receive. But those are the ones you enjoy. None of us enjoy cleaning up after a two year old who has been allowed to throw food all over the restaurant.

Most, if not all, waitresses have to have some intelligence to do the job well. The ones who don't will not last long.

Oh, yeah, and I have an IQ of 214! I worked in an office for years and returned to waitressing cause the hours fit me better, and I enjoy it! Most of it, anyway.

Ignore the ones who treat you like you have the brains of a wall. Remember the ones who thanked you for doing your job well.

I am a waitress. I also have a business degree. I graduated with honors. So, am I stupid? No. The fact is that I make more money serving tables than I did as a manager, working for the sheriff's department, among other jobs. I think the main reason servers get a bad wrap is simply because the people with that attitude have never served a day in their lives. I've heard so many times "how hard can it be to take an order and deliver the food?" A lot of people have had bad experiences in restaurants. They tend to come in with a poor attitude. It's my job to help them relax and enjoy their dining experience. If I fail...I'm stupid? Perhaps. But, I've learned not to worry about it and simply do the best job I possibly can.

Because they are ignorant. They assume servers must be uneducated and below them. I work at an upscale restaurant as a cocktail waitress, and i will have a masters degree in about a year...im just working there because i can make $200/night so i onlyhave to work 2 days a week while i am in school. Most of the people that work in my restaurant are either in school or have a college degree...they are working there because the money is just too darn good. So when people treat waitresses and waiters badly, its only because they have never worked in a restaurant before, and dont realize that stupid people can't survive working in a setting like that. Thats probably why they never worked there.

Waitressing is hard work!!! You have to remember alot at once, be patient, and deal with the back of the house. People have worked hard for their money, and they expect good service. Most people in the service industry do not get the credit that they deserve. You should. When you get a bad customer just consider the source and don't take it personally! Chances are that if you have a good attitude they will come back and remember you.

I guess its a stereotype and to do with their pay scale. Often those paid the least are automatically deamed as stupid. I use to work behind the bar, and most of the other staff use to be deamed stupid and never get tips - as they wouldn't bother to learn the regulars drinks.
A lot of waitresses in Australia are usually doing a Uni degree at the same time and waitress for some extra cash.

Years ago someone said "the customer is always right". WRONG!!!!! That is a kiss my @$$ attitudt that people have because of that stupid quote. Waitresses don't make enough as it is and then to put up with morons. No, I'm not a waitress, never have been. I have witnessed plenty of jerks though.

Basically because they can. People assume that because you are a waitress you have no brains. It also makes them feel superior to belittle people like waitresses. Hopefully the saying that everyone eventually gets what they deserve is true and those that look down their noses at others end up having the shoe on the other foot.

People get very irritable when they are hungry. I worked as a waitress for a summer one year when I was in college. I wasn't cut out for it. You're right- too much to remember.
