First lets start with the Torah.. This can mean several things. 1. It means the first 5 books of Moses, the first 5 of the Hebrew Bible - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and Numbers. 2. It can mean the ENTIRE JEWISH LAW given to the jewish people by God, this includes the whole hebrew bible, and the talmud, and the whole oral law. The Torah is , in essence, God's revelation of himself to the jewish people.
The Talmud, is understood as part of the Torah, it is the written oral law. It contains thousands of debates between the Rabbi's concerning matters of the Law. Anything and everything you can think of, e.g. "what matters more the commands to God or the commandments toward me," etc... The Talmud has many beautiful quotes and aphorisms, to cite a few..."Kindness is the heart of the Law" .."The whole Law is summarized in this : love your neighbor as yourself" -Rabbi Akiba. And Finally the most beautiful of all stories in Judaism (in my opinion): A gentile approached Rabbi Hillel (the kind) and said "Summarize Judaism on one foot." Hillel responded kindly, "What is hateful to you, don't do to others...the rest is commentary , now go and study." The man then went and converted.
