Try and schmooze your way into the J Bar at the Gramercy Park Hotel. The atmosphere is incredibly romantic with candle light, Basquiat paintings, crushed velvet benches and modern music. They have a nice wine list too. Another favorite, but completely different is the bar at the Carlisle hotel on 35 East 76th Street . Anyway, it starts with a "B", Behlemann or something like that and they have incredible signature cocktails. They also have a piano player that plays stuff from way back when and it just has that romantic, old world feel about it. Good luck!

Good date for the winter:
Ice Skating in Central Park (Rockefeller Center is to crowded)
then whisk down to Lil' Frankies and have some nice pizza and wine. It's a great spot and not too expensive.

If you really want to get into a restaurant that requires reservations, find out if they have seating in the bar area or better yet eat at the bar. Ususally you don't need res. to eat in those areas and it can be alot of fun.
