Nope, there are 4 types.

Secure digital
Compact Flash
Micro
and memory sticks.

they come in a variety of "sizes" from 256, 512, 1 gb, 2 gb

If you take a ton of pictures (300+) then 1 GB should be sufficient.

No not all memory card fit any camera. There are several types of memory cards for digital cameras. Smart Media, Memory Stick (Sony's propitiatory card), Compact Flash, XD, Multi Media, Micro SD ( commonly found in phone camera ), and the old school PCMCIA ( found in the old Nikon N90dx ). And a whole bunch of mini versions of these are popping up everywhere. Since the gadgets tend to get smaller and smaller now days, its inevitable for new versions to be introduced in the near future. I heard that there's a working model of a clear crystal like memory chip that acts like the crystals found in Superman's Crystal cave. It is said that a tiny square inch of this crystal like memory chip could hold 20 gigs of memory.

In any case the best place to purchase memory cards for your camera is in a store that only sells memory cards or computer gear.

No they do not. All manufacturers use a certain type of memory card for their digital cameras.
Probably the most popular and widely used memory card now, is SD (secure digital) mainly due to its small size. Canon, Nikon, Panasonic & Kodak as well as a few others, use SD for their memory.
Fujifilm and Olympus use the xD-Picture Card.
And Sony only uses the Sony Memory Stick (well, thats what you'd expect from Sony).
CF (compact flash) was once the most popular card type, but now (probably due to it's larger physical size) is rarely used...even though Canon still use it for their Digital SLR range.
So, it all depends on which brand of camera you choose...as to which type of memory card you must buy.

Nope. They are usually specific to the brand of camera. Some of the more popular ones are:
Kodak: Compact Flash, SD (Secure Digital)
Canon: Secure Digital
Sony: Memory Stick
Fuji: xD card

Best bet is to check the manufacturer's documentation to see what type is used for your given camera.
