Chinese (Mandarin) is taught mainly though route learning in many countries e.g. Singapore where I come from, mainly because chinese has thousands of characters to learn. For young children, getting them to be familiar with characters using flashcards is best. They need to be able to see the word and understand what it means. The more words your recognise, the more you know. That is how chinese basically works. Also, speaking chinese at home helps a lot as children will be able to learn the intonation better. If you do not speak chinese, try and get your kid to be exposed to it as much as possible by mixing with chinese speaking individuals in your neighbourhood etc. Watching Chinese programmes and shows also help a lot and makes learning more fun. Try and get shows without subtitles so children will be forced to find out what the show is about. However, in the beginning, you might want to start off with the subtitles on. Hanyupinyin (english words to help with pronunciation) should be introduced only later on in the child's learning. Introducing it too early makes the child more dependent on it and less dependent on memorising the characters. Chinese is about the characters, not the hanyupinyin. Do not force them to learn the language and make it as enjoyable as possible e.g. giving rewards when they are able to recognise say 10 words. Making learning a chinese a chore (like what I went through in my country's education system) only makes it even harder for children to pick up the language. Help them fall in love with the language and their learning will increase on its own. =)

at my old school they taught chinese, japanese, russian, spanish, arabic, german, and french. what i've come to learn is, if you're going to teach kids a language, teach them at a young age cuz they'll pick it up quicker.
