Avast Anti-Virus is, imo, the best free one out there.

I have tried many. Try searching for Downloads.com, or PC World Magazine's writer reviews. Also, listen to computer shows like Kim Kamando, or WGN (am 720) wednesday nites for "Web nite wednesday" info. Other suggestions are Hijack This, CNET Reviews, Net Squirrel with Pat Crispen. These all talk about good free anti-virus. I've had nothing but praise for AVG and the free anti-virus on SBC Yahoo/Att software. I have not liked to "paid" anti-virus companies that are well know, because thier scans even said my home videos or pictures were viruses, when I knew they were not. AVG and one other that also starts with "A" has good results for me. However, having 2 anti-virus programs on one computer can cause problems. Go with Windows updates first. Then try AVG, or if your internet provider offers or includes anti-virus, go with those, if they are free.

Over the years I've obtained numerous anti virus programs for my computer either free or I paid for annually. Best thing to download for free is Ad-Aware. Go to www.lavasoft.de and download their free program. It's the most used program in the world and works great. But if you want a program with continous protection and email scanning and etc. Then you may need another program. Best bet is to go to www.download.com and they usually provide numerous programs for your pc's health.

Grisoft's AVG Free is completely free, frequently updated, and very effective. I've been using it for quite a while now and I'm 100% satisfied. (And yes, it passes the eicar test. I just checked it.)
