Chihuahua's are alert and loyal. Their personality comes in a small package. They become very attached to one or 2 people very easily.
They love being pampered and love all the attention they get from their master.
They are very affectionate but they can be great watchdogs if that's why you waqnt one.
It does not need much exercise at all. It can get all it's exercise requirements by just running around the house.
They need only a little grooming each day (depening if you get a short haired Chihuahua or a long haired).
You must buy Chihuahua's from reputable breeders as they will have great dogs for good value. Do not buy from someone in the newspaper or a pet store.
They need approx. 3-4 small meals when they are pups and then 2-3 small meals when they are older. Only buy premium dog food, stay away from home brands because they lack the nutrition that dogs need each day.
You need to brush his/her teeth each day - get them used to this when they are pups to avoid difficulty when they are older.

firstly buy from only a reputable breeder NEVER NEVER from a pet store...
make sure the parents of the puppy were taken to shows to prove worthyness of being bred and were not simply "some dogs bred to make a litter" (er...like the parents of pet store pups)
make sure the breeder provides you with health record and guarantee... NEVER pay for a pup who hasnt been seen by a vet and doesnt come with a guarantee

ask what kind of food its on.. if the food is low quality (from grocery or wal mart) then you will want to switch after about 1 month allowing it to adjust to its new home first before changing the diet... avoid BHT, BHA, and by-products

Chihuahuas will need feeding 3-5 times a day when young

Chihuahuas need Obedience lessons primarly for socialiaztion which is commonly overlooked in the smaller breed dogs

Males - neuter at 8-10 months
Females - spay at 6 months
spayed or neutered dogs have fewer health and agression problems

regular vet checks...

Most important thing you can do is NEVER NEVER buy from a pet store - you will pay too much for a low quality pup and contribute to the cruel industry of breeding pups for profit with no regard to genetics or health or breeding conditions...(see puppy mills)

I have read all the comments , and agree with most everything about Our dogs,to add that when we got Ezabella , She is the best thing . I have to worn you,can over spoil them. (ex) we could not get her to eat. so I started boiling skinless chicken breast and now we can't get her to eat anything else. I am so glad that I am retired. LOl she is so active that we have to play ball or give her attention almost all day. I know it is how you train them. That is our problem. But I still would not give her up. We also had never had a dog. I only say they are like children they learn what you teach them. Love them and they will always love you . Enjoy them They have a nice long life.

Hi, i have a one year old female chihuahua and she is the best thing that ever happened to me. Some people say that they are aggressive, feisty pets. however she is the opposite. she loves people and will never snap or bit anyone and is very friendly. since they are tiny pets u need to take her out to dog parks so he can be social with other dogs. Its all about how u train her. I will tell u that they are always cold and shivering most of the tI'me. They are very and i mean very attached to their owner. she sleeps with me and if im on the couch watching TV she wont go in her bed she will sit next to me and then sleep. at this very moment she is on my lap sleeping. Chihuahuas are very attached to their owner and they aren't hard to potty train. It took me 2 or 3 months to potty train her. the first three months u need to train him and after that u will not have any problems. You will not regret having him and u will enjoy Ur pet.

one major thing thats goin to be hard but it is the most essiential!!! dont let it do whatever it wants you are the alfa!!! you are the pack leader. if it is doitn something wrong correct it!! its ok to spoil em once and a while but not all th time. walk it! they are high energy dogs! and can be yappy if not trained right. just be the leader make sure it does what you say!!! and watch dog whisperer channel 58 (cable) its like national geographic chanel. hes awsome he shows tips on handleing dogs. they can work for any dog.

chihuahuas are happy little things, you must remember that they do get very excited, and can bark alot, they are usually a one person dog. my husband has had two, the 1 st one died about 5 yrs ago and he now has another, they like to travel with you, eat off of you plate, you must be firm, consistant but gentle, their little bones can brake easy, also remember, they have small bladders and need to poop soon after eating, i have found they dont housbrake well, we have a doggy door, and silverbell has adopted to it well.
check out this site, it has much info plus links to other sites

Don't give then table scraps, cause it will make them fat and unhappy. My puppie is happy because of it.
