I know this sounds positively disgusting an painful, but I promise it's not that bad and it works. Don't listen to stupid people who say stupid stuff like "a hot wash cloth."

I get the d@mn things all the time. I've gotten prescriptions and everything, but nothing works faster than this:

As soon as you feel one coming up start taking Lysene. (It's a vitamin.) If you don't have any, that's fine.

Once its all the way up, take about 10-12 cotton balls and a bottle of rubbing alcohol. Drench each cotton in alcohol and put in right on the cold sore. It'll burn a little, but after a minute you don't even notice. Apply as much pressure as you can stand.

After you've used one cotton ball, wait about 5 minutes and repeat with another. The next day, I promise you'll have a singnificant decrease.

I've heard peroxide works. I know that L-Lysine works. It's a vitamin you can get at any store. It dries the sore up ,but you have to take three or four pills a day. They're perfectly safe tho. No side affects. This really works! Better than any thing i've ever tried, and i've tried them all! Even abreva. You can also go to the doctor and get a prescription for Valtrex.

if you can handle a little pain, pop it open with a sterilized pin and put a drying agent in it like salt (which is the most painful) or rubbing alcohol or what I actually use is antibacterial gel like hand sanitizer from purell it hurts for about 45 seconds and then stops and it dries it out from the inside. but if your ever looking to get crafty with them I am actually participating in a study where they gave me some medicine the next time I get one so that at least if I do get one I am getting some money for the damn thing lol

Question is, what is causing your cold sore? You just might need a course of antibiotic. Try keeping the area clean and check out your vitamins. Are you taking adequate supplements?

If you get ice on it right away, it will take down the swelling. You have to keep on repeating the procedure every couple of hours though, which is inconveient.
Carmex works wonders as well.
