The appeal is that the people are off limits. It makes it more interesting. And to me personally, sickening. If people cannot understand one of the Commandments (and even in other religions, not just Christainity), they deserve what they get.

Rhetorical Question? As an answer though:
In a perfect world there would be someone for everyone, but this isnt a perfect world. Every one wants Mr. Right or Ms. Beautiful & Smart, but in truth there is no such thing, or there are few of said people. Human beings are inherently selfish and because of this don't think of who they may hurt, they only think of what they want and need. Think of good partners as a resource like trees. If the forest has all been harvested and you need to build a loghouse where are you going to get the logs? Someone elses house. An unfortunate truth. Another reason is that people are often obsessed/interested in what they can not have. Ever seen a child completely uninterested in something, but the second you take it away they want it? Its the same idea, only applied to adults.

Men from their teenage years on to almost death want sex at least 52% of the time (from an episode of 20/20 on ABC aired on Sept. 30, 2006). Men have a psychological need for sex so strong that they can stray in a marriage or encourage a woman to stray. This is part of their basic instincts and part of their genetic design.
If a happily married man suddenly stops receiving sex, then he can want to go out and find it. Men can rise above their instincts and remain loyal, but this instinct for sex is a very strong force, and hard to deny.
Most often a male is the one that strays in a marriage. When the female does it is because her primary need is not being filled and that is the need for relationships. If the husband starts to ignore her or take her for granted then their relationship is stalled. A woman can’t stand that and it could be enough to make her stray. This is why it can be common for both the man and the woman to stray. Each one wants to fulfill their denied goals.
If a man has an affair then it frequently ends with the other woman wanting the male to divorce his wife and marry her. A man may want a sexual relationship just for sex, but few women do.
The single, and usually younger, woman might want an affair with a man so she can win him. She has an instinctive need for a relationship with a male in which he can provide for her and protect her (and the family that she might develop). A married man is a tried and tested man, who can succeed in a marriage (baring his recent activity, which the woman is sure she can change). The older man is often successful and has a lot of money. This makes him very desirable.
To a woman relationships are as important as sex is for men. The most important relationship is between the mother and the child. A mother's brain will actually rewire itself to insure this. Even if a woman doesn't want to have children the need for that relationship is still very strong, so she may feel little remorse for stealing the married man.
A woman can stray and be attracted to a younger man, but usually it is not just for the sex. Men are geared to have sex often and with as many partners as possible so they can reach an orgasm easily (and they cannot fake it either). Due to the woman’s need for a relationship she needs more than just a “quickie” to satisfy her. The best way for a woman to get pregnant is for the male to make repeated attempts, to penetrate deeply, and to maintain contact. This is why it is harder to bring a woman to an orgasm; foreplay is a must (since the activity is hidden inside a woman’s body she can fake an orgasm). If a woman has an affair she does it to get back at her husband, and punish his behavior for putting their relationship in a tailspin. Or the woman wants a new relationship. A young hot male may satisfy her for a time, but rarely for a long time. Usually, the woman will leave him too.
Women can fulfill their most important desire without sex; they don’t even need a man to do it; so a woman can get along fine with just her friends and no man. A man needs to have sex, that is his most important desire and he can’t do it without a willing partner. It is also been shown that men get a higher production of endorphins when they have sex with a woman, than when they don’t (sorry, I don’t know the exact source here, I think it was NBC’s Nightly News). A man can get along fine without a wife, he doesn’t need the relationship, but he will still be searching for sex so he can fulfill his primary need. Such a man could have many affairs, many sexual conquests and be happy, as long as he is fulfilling his greatest need.
Men can ruin a marriage when their need for sex is not met. Women can ruin a marriage when they desire a successful male, and don't mind that another woman may have first rights to him. There are other reasons, we are not slaves to our instincts, but for the average person the instincts are the default mode and they shape how they think.
Look at the responses and the sex of each responder and you will have confirmation of what I am saying.

You are right about people having no respect for marriage. Instead of marriage being a permanent and faithful thing people now see it as a disposable commodity. I have been married for 11 years and can honestly say that I have never cheated and have no desire to cheat.

A lot of people (especially guys) seem to c married people as a challenge and they want to c how far they can get. They dont respect marriages and they think its a game. I ve seen a lot of girls who get much more attention when they have a wedding ring on, then when they have it off.

Married men and women are off limits -- okay but maybe someone needs to remind this to the married men and women who stray outside their relationships.
it is easy to tell others they are off limits but if they choose to not be off limits who is really doing the tresspassing?

It's simply a challenge to some people, I think. And to some people, no one is off limits. They're concerned more for their own pleasure and feelings than anyone else's and so they aren't concerned with the consequences of their actions.

Tell me about it. I'm a newlywed. My husband is over seas in Iraq and like 2 weeks ago one of my ex boyfriends who I haven't spoken to in many months. I told him I was married and I told him my hubby was in Iraq and he wanted me to ignore the fact that I was married, ignore my wedding vows to "forsake all others" and cheat on my husband with him just because he realized he made a big mistake by screwing with my feelings. Yeah he was saying oh you know he's getting his over there with hookers or whatever and I'm here. You know you want to be with me again. He was just saying all this bullshit and what the hell. Does he have no respect?

Yes, so few people have respect for marriage either their own or someone elses.
