No, it should not be for free. Your decision if you want to discount it but not a must.
I think by offering the customer another meal less spicy was the right thing to do. The meal wasn't prepared wrong, the customer ordered something they shouldn't have. Sounds like they just wanted something for free.
I've ordered things and either didn't like it or it wasn't what I thought. I didn't complain, it wasn't the resturaunts fault.

if there was not any indication that the dish was spicy, it would be understandable if the guy was upset. however, you did the right thing by offering a less spicy alternative. if the guy really threw a fit and demanded his meal be free, there seems to be some illogic in his temper tantrum. if it were to be free, that assumes he could eat it, which he just complained about because supposedly he couldn't. if he was insisting on getting yet another meal and having that one free, i'd show him the door and ask that he not return. you don't need customers like that. every once in a while someone comes along with such a petty outlook on life that they need to play stupid games like this. be glad you're not him.

Did the menu state that the item would be spicy? Generally I would say that life's a risk and risks always have some cost. If I were the customer, I would not have asked for something free if I decided to try something new. The most I would offer as a server would be to not charge for that meal, but he would have to pay for the replacement.

Iam sure you heard the customer is always right.However if they cant have spicy food and ordered it anyhow they should have asked it to be less spicy.Next time he comes in tell the hostess he gave you a hard time and see what happens.Some people come in ever week and say there food is not right just to get money off. Did he eat it?

he should have received another entree that wasn't spicy.....
he should have told you he couldn't handle spicy....
he does not receive a free meal...
he's probably a scammer going around doing this in other restaurants
I always ask if it's spicy, since i live in Texas and most things are ..i usually ask for no jalapenos or not to add the spice which makes it spicy

Well...I'd usually just ask for a less spicy dish. You have to pay, of course, or atleast a tip for putting up with all of this.

If he can't take spicy food he should not have ordered it. You already offered him a less spicy one. If he wants to throw a hissy fit, then call your manager and have him/her deal with the jerk. He's lucky it wasn't me I would have spit in his food.

In your shoes, I would be upset that I could not please this person without effecting the bottom line. However, as the owner of the joint I would pay for his meal to get him to stop complaining. I would not want the other patrons to be bothered by this person's rude personality nor would I want to deal with negative publicity if he decided to stand up in the restaurant and tell his story to everyone; or worse contact the media.
