How new are the homeowners?
They may need some power tools to put up the new fixtures and blinds/curtains. I nice electric drill is something I would have loved to have when I first moved into my new home. It's something most people don't think about but it saves time and pain.

My husband and I use our toaster oven literally everyday. Get the biggest one you can afford. They're great because you can actually cook in it or just use it as a toaster. A crock pot is another thing that no kitchen should be without. if they like coffee a coffee maker could make a good gift. Another good gift for coffee drinkers is a coffee grinder and really good whole coffee beans. Some people like house plants, something in a nice decorative bowl would be good. If the couple were married in the last year, they might still have a gift registery from which you could pick a gift. A laundry basket with detergent and dryer sheets and some towls would be nice.

Candles!!! Everyone uses candles somewhere in the house. You can buy some yummy smelling candles and put them in a cute basket with a pretty bow. This is a great cheap gift for men and women. Gift cards only say that you didnt have enough time to think of a great gift.

You could buy a very nice porcelain cup and saucer at an antique shop and then plant some pansies in the cup -- they are very sweet.

You could bake them some cookies, or a cake, muffins. You could make them a tray of lasagna to have one night. If they don't cook, they might appreciate some home cooking.

You can always bring them flowers. Flowers are always appreciated. Or bring them a gift certificate for a local restaurant in their new neighborhood.

But they do eat, yes? You can get very nice place mats and/or napkins for their dining table. Or scented soaps, and some nice guest towels and put them in a gift basket for their bathroom.

Or two taper candles and inexpensive holders, and a DVD, some fancy cheese and crackers - put it in a basket and call it "dinner and a movie."

Lovely tea towels to dry their dishes with from Crate and Barrel if you are in the US, Country Road if you're in Aussie/NZ, or Ikea for the rest of the world or similar. Tea towels are lovely!

A nice plant, a door mat. Maybe a couple chairs for their backyard or front porch? Wind chimes or something for the back yard that they could plant. (these are all things I received when I moved into my home)

A laundry/bath package - ironing board, clothes basket, iron, and if you budget correctly you could get a bath towel, bath mat, hand towel, and wash cloth to put in the basket. If you opt for the towels, get them in a beige or white color.

I found the most useful present given to me at a house warming party was the citrus juicer.
