look for a horse thats a "MUDDER"

meaning they run well in wet conditions! With a muddy track only the most powerful of horses are able to put up a decent pace!

Also look at the horses if possible a tall or long legged horse is able to run farther with each stride-thus covering the track with using less energy!

Look for notices about equipment changes prior to the race. In the case of a wet or muddy track, make note of any horse getting
mud calks or half bends (shoes for better traction). The reasoning: A shoe change is an extra expense , and probably wouldn't be done unless the owner thought that he has a chance to "be in the money."
Also, look for a horse with early speed. The horses behind them get mut & dirt in their faces, which might tend to slow them down a bit.
If there are no outstanding mudders or webbies ( they do well in a wet track) in the field, handicap the race as if it were a fast track.

Look for a horse with a combination of a good pedigree for wet tracks (Mr. Prospector, Dixieland Band is two excellent sires whose kin run well usually) and horses that have fairly good records on wet tracks.
