ok, first....unless that person is educated in nutrition and/or used a calculation to determine the number of calories you need to lose weight...then 1200 is an arbitrary number... i.e. most people would lose weight on a 1200 calorie diet...however, this may not be a) healthy for you and b) may not help you achieve your ultimate goal since you may lose the weight, but feel tired and/or lose muscle tone during the diet... finally, 1200 calories is not alot of food unless you are getting plenty of low calorie fruits and vegtables (which i recommend since you need vitamins and minerals now more than ever)
i do not have a calculation for you (i believe the posters above me do however) but i will tell you that your body weight currently, your daily activity and they type of weight you want to lose are all important to setting the caloric limit... also, after you get a better calculation (please do this bc 1400 is prolly not right unless this person knows what they are doing-- because each body is different) you may need to adjust it after a few weeks if you are not losing or losing too quickly...
add some cardio or weight training to speed up your weight loss and to tone up your muscles...
for the avergage women wanting to lose weight, 2000 is too high ...so the poster who said 2500 is way too high for a woman unless she is over 6 feet tall and plays a sport.

In actuality you can eat as many calories as you want, as long as you work off those calories and then some during that day. If you ate 1200 calories today, you need to burn more than that to lose weight.

You will find the calories on the food packaging. Look for the figure with 'kcal' beside it. Should be easy enough to keep track of the foods your eating and not go over 1200.

calories mean absolutely nothing about weight
it depends how many calories are from fat, carbs, and protein
you want 20% of your calories to be from fat, 20% from protein, and 60% from carbs
1200 is WAAAAY below wat you should be having each day. (need like 2500)
just be balanced and you should be fine
btw, YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO EXERCISE TO BURN CALORIES!!!!
(your metabolic systems function by means of the energy provided by food, which means that your brain uses calories to think, and your heart uses calories to pump)
