If it's a good gift, it's a good gift. Doesn't matter how much it costs.
I've bought bags at a dollar store, filled it with dirt and pretty petunias, and given that to friends. Or you could get a couple of things at a dollar store and combine them -- like a basket with some tea bags and pretty cookies.
There are also some gifts that are completely free -- taking the time to make your favorite family member a meal, or giving foot massages, or something like that.
But you know, in some families, it isn't the thought that counts. It's the money you spent. And that's kind of sad. If you think your family will humiliate you for giving an inexpensive gift, maybe it's just best to send a card or do nothing at all.

I get them from my best friend for Christmas every year. I've got used to it. I think that you can find some good stuff there. Anyway, it's the thought that counts, right? I wouldn't be bummed if someone in my family gave me a Dollar Store gift. I think that would be incredibly materialistic of me to say the least.

Hey, I give gifts made up of free samples if I can get enough of them. Baked goods and crafts are also good if you're poor in pocketbook, but not creativity or sources for creativity, like the one below. People whom you care enough about to give a gift to won't care where it came from if it's infused with love.

Just make it creative! Stick to a theme or something. A body wash, loofah, and body lotion. My mom is always broke and comes up with the most creative ideas from the dollar stores. Some of them even have really nice plants.

I think your family should understand your predicament. A suggestion would be: instead of trying to buy a really cheap knock off and pretend that it's worth more than it is, buy what you can afford - a toy trinket or a gag gift.
Another way to save money is to make something yourself and offer that as a gift.

I think if you put a lot of thought about the person into the gift it doesn't matter where you get it from.
