I am amazed at the people who answer questions when they do NOT know what they are talking about! I just got the following from the US Government website:
* On January 8, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.
* As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
The cost is $97 US. I just got the application forms, myself, as I am going to apply for my US passport right away.
Please note above that the passport requirement as of January 8, 2007 is for AIR TRAVEL, only. They are trying to phase this in and they keep changing the dates all the time. Go to the website I posted below and you will find all the information you need, including the application forms you can download and print. For a first passport, you need to go in-person as you need to bring all your ID with you. All the requirements are given on the website and the addresses of where you can go to apply in-person.
Really, people should be careful about giving false or made-up information to people about important questions!

Americans will need a passport starting in 2007 to leave and come back into the U.S.
Of course, illegals can come and go as they please.
