I stupidly was caught having sex with a work associate, by her husband. I'm 5'1 he's 5'9 and very fat. I got a kicking and many would say i deserve it. Now 6 months later the threats and the intimidation from him is still appearing. I am really reluctant to goto the police. Could someone advise me what is the best Martial Art I could learn to learn self defense with regards this situation.

Thanks

Dude you slept with his wife... Your lucky he doesn't kill you. Either avoid the guy or quit your job.
What do you think you are gonna learn an art in a matter of days and go and kick his *** like Van Damme. Save the money that you would spend on lessons and buy a good pair of steal toes next time he corners you kick him in the nuts.
Cause if your looking to beat someone up Martial arts is not for you. And a self defence course is only gonna teach you how to scream use pepper sparay and kick in the nuts.

I was getting a little worried until I reached almost the bottom of the page as very few people thought of judo.
It is a very good martial art for short vs. tall opponent, because you are taught to use your position to an advantage - for instance if you think about it, surely you would agree that throwing someone is easier if you can actually get under them etc.

Some people along the way have mentioned a few arts which are first and foremost attacking ones, but I think in your (tricky) situation a defense is more suitable.

Again I do agree with al the comments about it taking ages to master and even then won't necessarily win the fights, but anyway... I got to brown belt in judo in 3 years because I trained a lot. I'm still working on the last one :) ...

Just tell him every time he threatens you, he will find you banging his wife later that night.
Seriously though, what are your plans after you become a martial artist. Kick his ***. What happens when he then goes to the police and you end up in jail. If you carry or use a weapon the same is likely to happen.
Record his threats and play them back for him. Tell him that your sorry for what happened but if he continues to threaten you, you will have no choice but to go to the police. This guy could have serious anger issues and really hurt or kill you. You trying a flying flamingo or elbow smash you learned at the local YMCA is just gonna get your face smashed in. Try to reason with the guy, if that doesnt work go to the police. Just keep remembering that you did bang this guys wife and you probably do deserve a bit of an *** kicking.

The standard answer to your question is any one of the so-called 'soft' martial arts, which are suitable for smaller people because they depend on turning the attacker's strength against them.

However... for your situation, you are asking the wrong question.

It's been said before, but it's true that to become proficient in any martial art takes years of practice - and even then, most MA are simply not effective in 'street fight' situations, and there are very few MA which will give you any realistic chance of compensating for the difference between your height/weight divisions.

Your options are:

1. Go to the police and/or relocate.
2. Bang his wife some more, get video evidence of him beating the crap out of you and then go to the police.
3. Arm yourself and take pre-emptive action.

If you choose option 3 you have to be prepared to see it through - you need to have your opponent dead, or at the very least you must ensure that he is permanently disabled - or else he'll probably come after you and kill you.

Good luck! I hope the shag was worth it!

If he IS still threatening you, then yeah you do need to get the police involved because that's harassment, and you could have a restraining order against this guy, they can't do anything to you because you slept with his wife as long as it was consentual.

first and foremost, Martial Arts are for defense only, not for attacking first, and by learning ANY Martial Art, you have to be aware of the consequences of what may happen if things get ut of hand and you severely injure the guy instead of subduing him.

Even if you were only defending yourself, the courts can and often DO look at it that as a Martial Artist, you should know how to control your techniques and could hold you liable IF a lawsuit arises, which just might happen if he wants to be spiteful.

But to answer your question, Any Martial Arts is good for learning self defense, there is No "best" discipline out there, and besides that, many of the disciplines that the other contributers post may not be available in your area.

So what you'll have to do is find out what discipline's ARE available in your area by checking the phonebook, internet websites of local schools via search engines, and pick a couple that piques your interest; then take a couple of trial classes (like a weeks worth if the school allows it) from each school you want to attend and then make your decision on which one interests you the most.

but theres no guarantee that if this guy decides to step up his threats against you, that you'll have learned enough techniques or have enough time in training to sufficiently defend yourself, you may be able to defend yourself against him as a beginner to intermediate student, but it can be risky.

It takes at least a couple of years with dilligent training to be decently proficient with the techniques you'll learn.

so first I'd think about getting a restraining order against this dude, then begin your training so as it may give him more to think about, because if he does decide to go against it, then you can give him fair warning after that and then defend yourself as necessary.

Go to the police, this guy could mean business. Martial arts take years to learn, they are not a quick fix.

If you are interested in really learning an art then observe all the schools in your area, choose the highest quality school, do not worry about style. The quality and frequency of training will outweigh your style.
Tips:
Never pay for rank testing and never sign a contract.

I was once caught in a similar situation(not uh with my pants down though). The angry boyfriend had 6 inches and fifty lbs on me. I avoided him, but he finally confronted me and a fight ensued. I anticipated that he would throw a straight right and ducked then took him down. From there I pummeled him until he gave up. All it took was a basic wrestling take down, really. Height doesn't help you that much in a grappling match, reach is more important in a fistfight. Learn some basic wrestling takedowns. Martial arts take months to perfect, you need a quick crash course on wrestling takedowns. If you don't think you have the leg strength to do this, then you need to think about keeping a weapon on you. Taser or pepper spray work best to immobilize someone without any long term effects.

Feel free to email me if you have any self defense questions

Depending on where you live you can do different things. If you live on the wes coast I suggest Butokukan Karate. It may seem useless at first but I'm very advanced now and haven't been doing it for a year yet. google JABKA. Click on the site that says japanese american butokukan karate association. Click on school locator and see f there's a school near you.
