I don't teach in California nor do I attend school in California. I'd be willing to guess some are good and others are lacking just like the other 49 states.

There are some schools that are in nicer communities where there are very few non-English speaking students are doing all right for the time being. Most "upper scale" neighborhoods are doing quite well.

On the other hand, the schools up in Los Angeles are around 70% hispanic/latino - making whites and other ethnicities the minorities. Those schools aren't doing so great - the level of education they're getting has lowered so much because most the students don't know enough English to learn fast enough.

I'm going to be negative and say they are going down hill. The scholastic standards are going up but too many kids can't even spell simple words. AND more and more schools are cramming the acceptance of homosexuality down thier throats from K -12. ie. "If you never experienced a homosexual episode, how do you know you're not an homosexual?" That was an actual question given to pre-teens at a public school. O.K. I'm off my pedastol.

Public K-12 are good if the school is in a good district. If it is in a bad district then it will be a bad school, ie urban area.

University of California system is excellent!

if you live in a "rich" neighborhood, then the schools are fine. if you pay for private school, it's better. Public schools in the San Francisco Bay Area are not great. I can not account for other areas. I found a great site. if you are considering a neighborhood or city, this will work for you. See below.

I went to school in a fifty percent hispanic school. There were alot of gangs at my school. I had to drop out because of gang violence a few times. I got teased for looking white all the time. You couldn't even look at a kid the wrong way with out a fight happening. I've had two teachers slap me once in third grade and once in ninth grade. It was one of the scariest times of my life I'm surprised I made ot through alive. A girl was raped in the bathroom once by a sex offender. I remeber we used to play dominoes for math credits at my continuation schhol. And my teacher let us do simple math problems with culculators for tests. That **** was funny when the teacher turned around kids were doing lines on the desk and smoking weed and blowing the smoke out the window so he wouldn't smell it. That's Cali for ya.

I went to a private school in southern California many years ago, my friends went to public school. their books that they brought home were one sixteenth as thick as mine. I imagine it is worse now.
