I would suggest that instead of trying to make the space look bigger, you make it look more intimate. That will actually play up the fact that it is a small room. I say, work with what you have.
Personally, for color, I would go with "Smokey Salmon" (dusty pink) if your bathroom is as small as you say. It's generally complimentary to skin tones under electric light.
Find yourself a nice picture to hang on the wall that has a close approximation to the wall color somewhere in the picture, then pick 2 of the main colors to use for accenting the space. Those colors should be in most of the items you put on the counter, towels, etc. Personally, I favor more sedate combinations. I'd probably go with copper and rust for accents, but thats just me...
By the way, this picture should be as large as you can get. That will fool the eye, making the room seem bigger than it is also. Remember though, you need to try to keep the general relaxation theme going. Try something abstract, but interesting.
Get rid of the towel rack, and put your towels in a nice basket next to the tub if you have the space. If there's no floor space there, put them on the counter next to the sink. Simply roll them up and put them in vertically. Depending on where the towel racks are in your bathroom, you may find some valuable wall space for shelves or something thats actually useful.
Most small bathrooms are rectangular. You can make the space look bigger without making it any less intimate by painting the end walls a slightly lighter shade of the color you chose. Just mix in about 1 cup of white per gallon. It doesn't take a lot. Take that new color when you're done with the end walls, add just under a quart of white more, and paint that ceiling!
Let's work with that Smokey Salmon color for a minute. After you've painted the room, picked some accent colors and accessorized, now go for the intimate and interesting. Get some pink or red colored candles to place around the room. Preferably on candleholders from your accent colors. Put them wherever you can. One candle should be scented. Just one. In a small room, any more may be overpowering.
Color coordinate yourself a nice basket of bubble baths and soaps to use for relaxing in your cozy bath and use that as part of the decor too.
Mirrors.... tricky here. If you're going for a more intimate feel to the bath, the last thing you want is to see reflections of the commode while you bathe, or to see inside the shower while you're on the commode... I'd suggest just keeping the mirror over the sink as the only mirror in the room. In fact, I would try to find a way to minimize it as much as possible.
One last tip for small spaces.... Avoid bold prints and large patterns. They have a way of overpowering everything else you put in small rooms.
These are just some thoughts. Hopefully, if nothing else, they will give you some ideas. Have fun with your project!
