Has this ever happend to you? You find yourself wondering if you should say hi and start a conversation. While you mull this over, you find yourself staring at the wall, looking at your feet, fiddling with your purse (or what ever you have in your hands). Before you know it, you have reached your floor and your are thankful that you were able to get out of there! I was wondering if anyone else does these same things? If you don't, what do you do??

Too funny, yes this used to happen to me all the time, just about every job I worked at had lifts, or if not I had to visit buildings with lifts. I thought the same as you...being alone with a stranger, looking at walls and toes, no conversation. All with locking eyes then quickly looking away, straightening something that does not need straightening Men with their ties, Women not knowing which hand to hold her bag with, or flicking the hair out of her eyes, rub the nose and continue to stare at the floor .....too funny....are we not the funniest creatures we have ever met? I love human nature it warms me.

When its Women only, we try to guess what perfume we may be wearing mainly because its the only thing one can focus on being so strong in a small lift....then count the ladders in each others stockings. If ones shirt is lopsided, we straighten ours. After deciding what the other is wearing - would not look good on self, we arrive at our destination.

Today I talk. I ask if they work in the building or are visiting? If visiting, conversation may play out or you may get a smile and just a 'yes'. If they do work in the building they may acquaint you with what they do and where they work. People love to talk about themselves....lol

It's not hard....after meeting the same lady all the time in a lift at lunch hour many years ago, we ended up going out for lunch together as we worked in the same building. We shared alot and we are still wonderful friends today. She is a true treasure in my life and I thank God everyday for delivering me an Angel.

Never miss an opportunity for friendship...it can spring from anywhere and everywhere, for on a higher level than what we can 'see' but only 'feel' we are all the same. One will never know if one doesn't just try.

Well, if you feel awkward about it, you could always prompt them to start a conversation first. You could always pretend to smack your knuckle against the railing on the inside of the elevator and then mildly curse and suck upon it, even if it didn't hurt at all.

It will get their attention, and they usually open up with an "Are you okay?" not that I've ever tried that deliberately or anything.

It's an accident that got me a (now ex) girlfriend, and a beautiful little daughter whom I couldn't possibly be more proud of.

No, i don't hate getting caught on the elevator with only one other person. I may speak, or even chit chat depending on how far up or down I have to go. Those things really don't matter to me, sometimes I don't have anything to say....and neither do they, and thats fine with me.

Yeah, it is awkward to be confined together with a stranger.

Doing what you do is better than breaking wind knowing the other person knows you di it.

Strike up a conversation, you never know where it may lead.

YES IF SOMEONE GETS ON AN ELEVATER.PUT YOU BACK AGAINST THE WALL,BRACE YOUR FEET TO SUPPORT YOU.WITH YOUR HAND NEAR THE BUTTONS.
A MAN IN CALIFORNIA WAS RAPING WOMEN IN THE ELEVATOR.HE WOULD HIT THE STOP BUTTON.THIS WAS GOING ON IN MY DOCTORS OFFICE BUILDING.EVEN WITH HIS PICTURE POSTED ALL OVER THE BUILDING HE STILL CAME BACK FOR MORE.
HEAD UP,NEVER LOOK DOWN,ALWAYS BE ON GUARD.I HAVE EVEN GOTTEN OFF AN ELEVATOR WHEN A MAN GETS ON.
BETTER LATE THEN SORRY.

This always happens to me! Whats worse is, I seem to always get stuck with somebody that looks like a psycho killer or just keeps talking to themselves.

It's never happened to me. But I think it would be ok, if the other person was a lady.
