No you don't have to take a driving test, trust me, my father in law turned 70 last yr, this was a question on his mind. However you do have to take regular eye tests and if you have any medical conditions, serious ones, then you have to have a letter from your doctor telling the DVLA that you are safe to drive. Oh and list medications. Hope this helps.

If your mother currently holds a licence and is driving, she will be contacted by the DVLA about continuing to drive after 70. She will have to visit her doctor who will sign a slip that says she is fit to drive, she sends that slip back to the DVLA who renew her licence for another 5 years. In 5 years time, she repeats the process. She does not have to re-sit her test.

Tell Mum not to worry, I knew an old fella who drove to his docs to get his ticket signed. He hit the gate post on the way into the doctors surgery car park and did not even notice until some one pointed to the damage - his doc signed him as ok to drive!

The Dvla from wales will write to your mum to inform her. Also she won't be able to get insurance unless she has resat her test-her licence will show this.

speak to DVLA, they should help. You find she may have to take a refresher course.
