my parents owned a funeral home and this is true. Bacteria gets into the tissues and breaks them down which releases gasses which make the body swell. The scientific name is putrefaction.

Yes. Something about the gasses inside the body are released by the organs after the organs fail. After awhile the gasses build up and this causes the body to expand. Eventually the skin will crack and let the gasses out. And yes it is extremely rancid. It's a long process though. It doesn't happen right away. That's why, when you find a body that's been dead a couple of weeks, it looks a lot worse than it did when it actually died.

OK YES it's true....when we die we turn a certain bluish color and since we no longer have control of our bladder or poop...it comes out too...so there is some smell....then the blood starts to decay along with the rest of us..and since there is no more oxygen intake and the carbon dioxide is trapped inside...it does swell a bit because it is gassy like a big fart bubble in us....when we are taken to the funeral home they make sure we are dead..they take out all our blood..sew our lips and eyes together because there is no more muscle keeping them shut...and they put makeup on you to make sure you look more of a natural color...then they fill you up with the fluid formaldehyde to preserve you a bit longer to be viewed and all....nice huh?!

Yes, 'tis true.
The human body is filled with all kinds of bacteria and when the bodily functions that keep this bacteria in check cease to work the bacteria colonies grow exponentially. Bacteria release carbon dioxide which accumulates in the body causing it to swell until the skin ruptures.
It's really quite fascinating.

Your English teacher shouldn't sugar-coat the subject . She should tell it like it is: Dead bodies stink after a couple of days and, if left alone longer they start to disintegrate, smelling so bad that only lower-order scavengers can tolerate them.

wouldn't surprise me... I think there were some overly graphic descriptions of some of the bodies of Katrina victims who were stuck in the filthy water and exposed to the heat and humidity, and the bacteria that built up probably did cause the body to rupture.

yes this is true. the gases inside your body expand and they have to get out somewhere. try taking hamburger meat and putting it in a sealed plastic bag like a ziplock bag and it will expand as it rots. the temperature also has alot to do with how fast or slow it expands.

Yes, the guy above answer is correct. Also an interesting fact is that when people die they s**t themselves everywhere. This is because you have all these muscles in your body holding everything together and when you die everything is just released. Dont show that in the movies do they?

Yes, bodily bacteria "ferments" and expands the body tissue during decomposition.
