I had the same problem and it was because I was clenching my jaw when I slept. It is sometimes called TMJ because the joint in your jaw is the "tempo-mandibular joint" (spelling?). Other symptoms of this are frequent headaches and sore teeth. You should see a dentist soon because he can give you a splint to try and fix the problem. it is a simple piece of plastic you wear at night and it keeps your teeth from touching. DON'T just get a nightguard b/c they don't really fix the problem. If the splint doesn't help you may try massage or cranial-sacral therapy. That was working for me but my insurance didn't cover it so I decided to try braces instead. The braces re-aligned my bite and I don't clench anymore. Make sure you see your dentist b/c the pain can get pretty bad and it is easier to fix the problem early. Good Luck!

It seems everyone is thinking you mean your lips are cracking from dryness but I know the "cracking" or "popping" noise you are talking about. It occurs right in your jaw joint....almost like when you crack your knuckles.

It sounds like you have an injury in your TMJ. If you get treatment now, and I mean NOW, you might be able to make teh cracking stop. This would be a good idea so that you don't end up with pain.

Talk to your dentist. If he/she does not have a good answer, ask for a referral or see an oral surgeon, who will either treat (conservatively) or know who to send you to for help. Consider a major teaching hospital's oral medicine department if you can not otherwise find help.

In the meantime, limit your diet to softer things so you don't have to open very wide or chew very hard.

It sounds like your dehydrated. A few other clues to dehydration are chapped lips and dry scratchy eyes.

Drink plenty of fluids and it usually clears up in a day or so. In the meantime keep the area moist with lip balm. But stay clear of any that have petroletum. I hope that helps.

I believe I remember having that when I was younger. You need to start using chapstix or something that will put protection on your mouth. I use it all the time, even though I wear lipstick too. My lips and mouth areas just get very dry.

this happened to me whe i was younger. i went to the dentist and the dentist had to put a thing inside so i wouldn't close my mouth when he was doing a root canal. it hurted so much, but i didn't say anything since i was young and dumb. so anyways i still feel my jaw cracking when i open it and close it. there is so many reasons why that can happen though. maybe you hit yourself or something.
